I think letting cats outside is fine, just as long as you don't complain when they get caught in your neighbor's backyard cat traps.

I can understand people being annoyed by cats being let outside due to loss of wildlife, crapping in your garden etc but it can be quite difficult keeping your cat inside particularly if you end up with a grown cat that is already used to it. I used to compromise and let her outside during the day and keep her inside at night, which annoyed her. Regarding the crapping in peoples gardens I can't guarantee it didn't happen but I am highly dubious (I was responsible for kitty litter duties).
