Far be it for me to question someone with "sharp" in their name, but that seems - if not dumb, than extremely results-oriented. It's not like they needed a FG and had the option to run the clock down to the last second. The very play he's using as an example snapped from the 12. They could still have gotten a first down without scoring, and then where would you be if you let the clock get too low?

There's a lot to question about Shanahan, but I don't think clock management in that last series is one of them
