Frank Sobotka is going to be pissed that cargo ship smashed into the bridge. I swear I see McNulty on one of the police boats.

Anyone instantly think of The Wire during this tragedy?

(hopefully everyone will be okay)

There was one caused by a truck in Washington state ten years ago but only a single span fell with no deaths.

Amazing ..if you watch the live cam footage there were a couple semis/cars on the bridge at almost every point before it collapses, and then miraculously as the ship hits the bridge there are no vehicles at all driving on the bridge. It appears the only vehicles are construction ones that were already parked.

I can't imagine the death toll had this happened during rush hour, so obviously this wasn't a terrorist attack.

I understand these bridges weren't constructed to withstand a hit from a cargo ship that massive, but my God will I be a little fearful crossing any bridges going forward. It collapsed like a house of cards.

I thought the same thing. I kept watching the footage to see if I could see any cars at all. 1 am, if there was ever a good time for this to occur.

TIL that the economic damage that might be caused by forcibly closing a major US port would never be of any value to anyone with grievances against the United States

Why wouldn't they hit the bridge at 5 pm then? You get the benefit of disrupting our economy plus a massive death toll.

Of course it wasn't a terrorist attack... That would have been like al qaeda hijacking red eye planes and flying them into the twin towers at 1 am.

confirmed accident

The ship (experiencing a power outage) was calling Mayday to the bridge team that kept cars from crossing. It seems like workers were on the bridge doing repair, but no commuters.

because Ships don't travel on their own schedule... there is a very controlled and set transportation corridor.

I’ve never seen The Wire so what do you mean when you say you’re getting The Wire vibes? Does that mean that a conspiracy theory type thing?

The city of Baltimore is widely considered an integral character of The Wire.

“The Wire's final shot, a static view of the city's skyline, emboldens the notion that first and foremost, this is a show about Baltimore. The city is the serial narrative's most present, analyzed and complicated character. Every aspect of the show is merely one part of the city as a whole.”

I've never watched the show. Does it do a good Job at accurately depicting the city?

The beauty of The Wire is that it takes the time to be as accurate as possible. I don’t live in Baltimore so I’m not qualified but I’ve read a ton about the show over the years and it’s given high praise for its authentic look at the drug trade, inner city schools, corruption in government and law enforcement, etc.

It’s 20 years old now but if you watch all 5 seasons of The Wire I doubt you will be disappointed. It’s on most people’s top 5 list of best TV shows.

I always think of The Wire every time Baltimore is mentioned. My first thought was that they're not dredging the canal next fiscal period. I remember Key bridge being a part of McNulty's nautical computations to dump the girls in the can on Baltimore CID.

As luck would have it, I’m rewatching the series now (into season 2). Perfect timing.
