They give food to the poor but sometimes the poor give it back.

+1 to Panera being over priced. +1 to their Broccoli Cheddar soup being amazing but it gives me the runs and disgusting farts.

A bowl and some bread and you've got yourself a meal.
Yep. This is correct. I just go with the breadbowl

Jack,

What does wouldn't custom order your sandwich mean?

Panera is awful.

anyone tried the new white castle breakfast waffle sandwiches?

Those look great, something appealing about the ragged waffle edges.

The Panera steak sandwich was pretty good. It was a little small and obviously overpriced but it had a great taste and was not overcooked.

It went great with the Broccoli Cheese soup.

They had some sandwich I wanted, but I didn't want the condiment that was on it, and I didn't want one of the vegetables. Cashier was like, "our sandwiches are premade and we don't make them to order."

So I snap left and sent to Chipotle.

panera basically sells sandwiches already made and wrapped up. most are completely ruined with mayo

Asiago Roast Beef >>>>>>>> Asiago Steak.

Why did they **** up a good thing?

Insta-boycott of Panera the moment I tried this chewy, lame sandwich.

This begs the question, what kind of wizardry are they using where a pre-made sandwich drenched with mayo doesn't get soggy sitting around all day?

I've only been to Panera a couple times, and maybe cause it was during peak times, but I seem to recall them making my sandwich right there. I mean, what else were they doing on that make line for 15 minutes?

In Durham you have:

Dain's Place (http://dainsplace.cho******.com/menu.cfm): great great burgers, but very small so may want to avoid peak times. Good beer selection.

Bali Hai (http://www.balihainc.com/durham/menu/index.html): Mongolian place where you pack a bowl with meats and veggies you want then they cook it for you.

Watts Grocery (http://www.wattsgrocery.com/): Farm to Table place with great food. Get a reservation if you plan to go for dinner.

Alivia's (http://aliviasdurhambistro.com/lunchdinner/): good food, cool venue with nice patio seating. Might be a little too collegey depending on what you are looking for. Turns into a bar at night, but has a very nice patio and isn't a straight up college bar.

Rue Cler (http://www.ruecler-durham.com/): French style restaurant. Recommend a reservation if doing dinner there.

Vin Rogue (http://www.vinrougerestaurant.com/menus.html): Also French, more known for wine list. Also recommend a reservation.

Two BBQ options that I didn't like too much but get good reviews, probably partially bc I like NC BBQ less than other styles: Q Shack (http://www.theqshackoriginal.com/index.html) and Bullocks http://www.bullocksbbq.com/). Bullocks is cash only.

Two sushi places that Duke students love, but I can't remember if they are actually good or if its just that they were good enough given the lack of fresh sushi in general: Sushi Love (http://www.sushilove.org/sushi/sushi-rolls/p8275) and Mount Fuji (http://mtfujinc.com/).

In Chapel Hill I would try to check out Top of the Hill for drinks, but no idea if their food is good or not (only have eaten there drunk).

Thanks for the tips!! When I was reading your post I was actually sitting at Top of the Hill. My hotel was right across the street so it was super convenient. /derail

I had some pretty interesting ff experiences. First, I stopped at Sheetz (I'd been plenty of times before but not recently) I got a make your own burger. I got the pretzel bun with deep fried mac and cheese bites (on the burger) with additional cheddar cheese. I like my burgers kinda plain so this was phenomenal. Terrible price point coming in at just under 8 bucks but I figured the money I saved on cheap cigs made it ok.

Next up, desperate and in the middle of nowhere we stop at a MacDonalds. It was more of a bathroom break until...I saw that this 24 hour location somewhere in either VA or NC. Right by the border was serving breakfast all day!!!!! I had to go for it. I then realized the only breakfast items you can get are the hotcakes and sausage. Whatever. I got it with an order of fries just because I could.

On the way back I stopped at a Roy Rogers. Not a turnpike Roy Rogers. A legit stand alone Roy Rogers. I got a bacon cheeseburger. It was good but considering I had eaten the sheetz burger the day before it didn't cut it. I also got a spicy chicken sandwich. I really enjoyed it and would rank it above wendys and checkers (I enjoy both of those). In addition, I got the roast beef sandwich. I thought it was pretty good but I'm not a huge ff roast beef guy. Def better than arbys. I also got the fried chicken because I used to eat that when I was younger. It was not nearly as good as I remember and several steps below royal farms. The mashed potatoes were servicable but I prefer boston market's mashed potatoes by a wide margin. And no, I did not nor intend to finish all of that. I just ordered because how often do you see a ****ing stand alone Roy Rogers. Why not give the menu a once over?

I missed out on cookout and bojangles and wanted to stop but there's only so much my wife can put up with.

Mediocre both times. The waffle isn't crisp at all. Might as well be served on two mini pancakes.

I've been to panera a few times. I enjoy the toasted cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese, unlimited coffee, and wifi. I never considered getting a real meal there.

Re: Panera

That's really weird about the not allowing custom ordering and pre-made sandwiches. It's def overpriced, but I've been to at least 10+ locations lifetime I'd say and they all operate the same way. Cashier takes order (I've had no problem ever customizing) and I go to the pickup area where every item is freshly made. They make the salad there, add the ingredients and press the sandwiches, etc. Was it a Panera Express or other non-standard location?

panera's frontega chicken sandwich is pretty awesome but i need that + a cup of soup and chips to be full which costs like $12 as i recall.

never experienced a premade sandwich there but the meat is definitely precooked.
