I go uhhh and I am instantly teleported back a freaking decade to the same Wendy's when I went through the drive-thru with my then 7 and 5 year olds to literally get two simple cheeseburgers and they HOSE me on the upsell and I end up paying some ungodly amount of money because I was a sap.
But not today Wendy's...NOT TODAY. I go 'uhhh large I guess...' and she says that'll be 9-whatever. I drive to first window and show the app. She calls her manager over and while he is arriving I start to read the fine print on my app and it says 'for small combo only.' Ok, small it is. He comes over, mashes some buttons and leaves. The lady at the window and I have a bit of a language barrier, but NOT TODAY, and she says $6.39 and I say no, it is $5. We have a Mexican Standoff for like 15 seconds, she has no idea why I am not handing her money(NOT TODAY is why) and I say 'bring him back.' She has no idea what I am saying so I point inside and then motion back to me and say 'bring him back.' She understands my sign language and manager comes back and I say 'It says $5 here and that's what I am paying. If that means a small, then small it is.' At this point I kind of feel like the guy from Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but NOT TODAY:
Manager is peeved and mashes some more buttons and says $5.35 and walks away. I hand cashier $5.35 and drive forward and obviously get a large combo because it is already ready and that is easier than changing it to a small. I say thank you and drive away, completely vindicating a decade-old bs upsell that Wendy's fully knows confuses people into spending money they had no intention of spending in the first place.
But NOT TODAY.
I had a similar experience today, but more my fault, when I went to burger king drive thru to get my $1 whopper.
Me: Whopper with cheese please
Her: OK, that'll be $6.79
Me: *pulls forward*
Her: 6.79 please
Me: Oh, I have this app coupon for $1
Her: That's for a whopper, not a whopper with cheese
Me: OK, I can pay for whatever the upcharge is for cheese
*note - so far this is exactly what I expected, the coupon was in fact just for a whopper*
Her: It's not accepting the coupon, whopper with cheese is still $6.79
Me: I mean - can you sell me the cheese on its own?
Her: No, it says not accepted
Her: Has to be regular whopper
Me: OK (obviously I'm not paying a 579% premium for cheese)
Her: Oh, they already made the whopper with cheese, here you go. That'll be $1.10
