I looked into it, and I probably agree, but I think as someone way out of shape and just getting back into fitness after 10+ years of being sedintary, boxing is a better ramp than BJJ is.
You might consider some form of martial art instead. Your legs don't do much in boxing, and there's a lot of muscle mass to work there. My personal favorite is Tae Kwon Do, but any sort of karate or gung fu would also be better than boxing, imo. You also get more full body flexibility.
The instructor is key. Instead of some studio guy like this:
try to find a city program or something like that, and explain to the instructor up front that you want to proceed slowly.
