A Bear Named Winnie is a good movie. I'm a 31 year old man and I'm not ashamed to say I shed a tear.

i mean technically yeah, but i meant that the info wasnt even presented in an interesting way so that googling would be better off.

it didnt really get deep enough into the consipiracy theory or anything and it was primarily the same 3 witness/speculators talking in circles.

Netflix suggested I watch "The Road" because I liked "The Big Lebowski" and "The Royal Tenenbaums"

WTF?

were they wrong?
doesn't say the movies are similar, right?

Just means people who liked those two movies are likely to also enjoy The Road, based on applying Netflix' algorithm to user rating data. Not that the movies are thematically similar. All three movies are within my range of preferences so, sample size of one, it checks out.

Based on some recs ITT and some positive reviews (notably the LA Times) - watched the documentary Collapse - basically it is a one-man rant by a conspiracy theorist named Michael Ruppert (although it is well produced).

Needless to say - while I found it interesting and was introduced to topics I hadn't spent much time thinking about (the term "peak oil" is uttered ~5 million times throughout the doc) - I don't know that I'd recommend people putting 2 hours of their time against watching this.

The doc gives Ruppert a forum to explain his views on the world (in great detail) and the imminent collapse he envisions. While he is both articulate and fascinating at points, when he speaks to topics I actually know about, he loses steam - mainly because he is incorrect or incorporates information in a manner that does not give a full view of the topic. (ie cherry picking facts to construct a tale conforming to his collapse theory, without real seeming expertise behind it.)

I think if the producers (who clearly make a point of deflating Ruppert's "expertise") gave us a more balanced view of Ruppert (conspiracy theorist v. guy who knows what he's talking about), it would've been more watchable, imo.

(I do think the producers were striving to do a more balanced documentary, but there is so much exposition/set-up time needed to introduce the basic theories underpinning Ruppert's thinking, we are left with this imbalance, imo)

Oh, and for those who've watched Collapse, or generally interested in doomsday type predictions, here is Ruppert making some collapse-type predictions for 2011 on 12/31/10 (not saying he is a total crackpot btw, but he's closer to that than not imo):

http://www.examiner.com/finance-exam...-ruppert-video

Quote:
Ruppert's Predictions for 2011:

1. Within weeks, maybe a couple months, there will be a downturn in the economy that will be worse than the Great Depression
2. New Republican Congress will bring legislation to allow states to go bankrupt
3. Store up at least 3 months of food and have an alternative water source
4. Forced collapse of municipal bonds so they can break the unions
5. California, Michigan, and Illinois to go bankrupt
6. Major cities such as Los Angeles, Detroit, and Chicago to go bankrupt
7. Civil unrest
8. China to implode, and world will feel repercussions since they depend too much on continued Chinese growth

As with all trends forecasters and predictions, one must take them with a modicum of scepticism, and always judge the evidence over personality. Michael Ruppert has been predicting collapse since 1996, and so far, it has either not occurred, or instead has been staved off through bailouts (2008) and Fed Interventions (QE1 and QE2).

will look at that link thx. I kinda wanted to get into a discussion about the movie/this guy. Do you know where I can find his older stuff he alludes to in the documentary when boasting about his predictions that came true?

I, for one, remember when they started building all the strip condos in Vegas all at once. I said to a friend there is no way there is enough people to buy 500k apartments to fill these up and I was just going to wait until they had to rent them all for 500 a month kinda tongue in cheek.

It doesn't mean I predicted the financial downfall or anything.

I just kinda want to get a feel for what they were or maybe how on the inside he was and what he knew that we didn't.

Amazon just added commercial free instant streaming of over 5000 movies and TV shows for Prime Members ($79 a year for free 2-day shipping, was already a great deal)

Been hearing this is coming, hopefully they add support to gaming consoles. I wonder how the content is. I think Netflix is up to something like 20k streaming titles now.
