I spent years researching and watching the top mobster movies. How did I completely miss this one? It's like 4 hours so I'll have to watch it in a few installments.
Fantastic film. Epic is the adjective I use to describe it. Enjoy!

Spoiler:

Noodles, I slipped.

to the bone
bright
I dont feel at home in this world anymore

There are also lots of others I enjoyed but recognize they are dumb (stuff like candy jar, and sierrra burgeos), I've only actually watched a few really terrible ones, so ive seen many more good ones than bad

Wind River is a movie that is on Netflix, it is not a Netflix movie. That's probably the reason why it's good!

I'm mostly stung by The Cloverfield Paradox being something Netflix decided, inexplicably, to hype up during the ****ing Super Bowl when it was one of the worst movies ever made, and also the fact that every review Fly leaves for a Netflix original film suggests they're bad. I haven't seen most of them, but like, they're obviously trying with stuff like Extinction (garbage reviews), How It Ends (garbage reviews), Mute (garbage reviews), Bright (garbage reviews), it's pretty hard to find legitimately good movies they've released. Their TV shows are way, way better.

Looking at their movie list, the best contrarian takes on "Netflix movies suck" are probably stuff like Beasts of No Nation, First They Killed My Father, Okja, and Mudbound (prob not a coincidence that 3 of those 4 are historical/war dramas).

Salt Fat Acid Heat

Watched the first two (fat and salt), not sure if I'll continue. The entire show is just the host wandering around going LOOK AT THIS BEEYOOTIFUL CHEESE AND THIS BEEYOOTIFUL MEAT AND THIS BEEYOOTIFUL SOY SAUCE AND THIS BEEYOOTIFUL THIS AND BEEYOOTIFUL THAT.

I guess the show is supposed to be about how to learn how to use these elements to cook better but I can't say I've learned a single thing yet, other than that this woman gets super SUPER excited every time she sees food.

Holy **** Netflix even ruined Gareth Evans?!?!?

Saulnier was bad enough but EVANS? Like it's bad enough they make unwatchable garbage(and seriously it's tough to overstate just how amateurish **** like Extinction is), but they are also taking up valuable time from extremely talented filmmakers. Gareth Evans should be on The Raid 4 by now!

Beasts of No Nation was good but since that was the first Netflix movie I don't think it counts, they bought the release rights after the festival circuit as a completed project and there was no such thing as the Netflix Original curse to infect it yet.

Goofy- You should at least watch the very very end of Extinction for what has to be the worst SFX shot in an allegedly major motion picture in the past 30 years. It makes the Scorpion King's The Rock **** look like a practical effect.

The VVitch was a much better horror film in that vein, I thought. Apostle runs way too long for what it’s doing as well.

So I watched(I didn't know it was out yet).

It is very much like the Wicker Man, except the "twist" that the remote villagers are Up To No Good is the premise, which ruins the whole feeling of dread... but then still draws out the plot for a ****ing hour because it turns out they are up to a different kind of no good.

You gotta pick one, either it's a seemingly not evil village where the main character discovers there's more than what appears or get right to the good stuff. Not an evil village that is BAH BAH BAAAAAAAAAAAAHM a double evil village.

It's gorgeously shot and incredibly well acted especially by Michael Sheen, but the first act is 30 minutes too long and the last act is just a trainwreck of two entirely different movies combined together.

Spoilers
Spoiler:

The supernatural witch and the crazy cult politics subplots were so disconnected it seemed like the cult people briefly forgot they were trying to kill the main character? Those two plots needed to converge at the beginning of the climax of the film so that we would like, want our hero to defeat an identifiable foe instead of just have a bunch of absolute ****ing nonsense happen.

More annoying ****
Spoiler:

Also this is some real botany nerd **** but movie completely ignores the entire premise that the island has toxic soil for all the scenes set in a goddamn verdantly green forest. Also the entire premise of the cult dispute being that one leader wants to do human sacrifice and the other didn't was sort of like, retconned after a bunch of scenes where they were clearly already doing a ****load of human sacrifice

Also the whole thing is very derivative of an early quest in The Witcher 3.

Sharp post, those are all good criticisms. It’s funny you mention the villagers forgetting something in your spoiler, I saw the same thing and it was so bad I thought surely I had missed something. Also agree that there is clearly talent on both sides of the camera, but the movie is a boring, drawn-out mess. I did not give a single **** what happened by the end. As you said, it’s a waste of talent by Netflix.

It's gotta be just the script or something, just watch the kitchen fight from The Raid 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAUj0cpxt-I

and without a word of dialogue or watching the rest of the movie you know which guy you want to win and then as the fight develops you root for his successes and get anxious at his failures.

Please go back to making martial arts movies Mr. Evans.

oh damn, I thought wind river was netflix. Anyway, I think most movies that get released are garbage, so netflix releasing garbage movies to me is no different than a real studio. I just know i've seen lots of good ones. Agree the TV shows are better tho, but I also think thats the case for non netflix movies vs non netflix tvshows these days too.

I dont get the garbage reviews for bright, maybe its because I was expecting it to suck, but i thought it was pretty good. Cloverfield paradox def was trash tho, lol

4 years ago people thought I was trollign when I said netflix was turning into a "tv channel" and turning into a tv channel only service. I was obviously exaggerating but I was kinda ahead of my time too.

didnt mean to say it in a bad way either, I was just saying how they stopped having as many premium movies as they used to.

haunting of hill house, my post still stands, its still good, def worth of a watch but its super tough to do genuine solid horror shows with solid plot. hill house is prolly the best we are gonna get, havent seen sabrina, i feel sabrina is too comedic. was hoping for a dark gritty take.

Dammit, this was the one Netflix thing that actually looked kind of interesting and that I intended to watch.

Oh well, I guess Narcos is out in a month.

I think it's a case of netflix trying to play both sides of the fence and not owning the fact that they have changed the way media is perceived/consumed.

The ability to binge watch a tv series entire season has enabled TV series to tell more complex and engaging stories than a film can ever dream of. There is VERY little chance of a 90-120 minute film being able to cover a topic as interestingly or comprehensively as a 10- 13 episode tv series can.

Alan Sepinwall can ***** all he wants about TV shows becoming 10-13 hour movies, but that is essentially what has happened.

This is huge for me, personally. Unless the story is a very narrow focus and/or time-constrained, movie narratives feel so rushed now.

Agree, but then HBO gives 10 episodes of GoT in 24 months, like we are supposed to await each epic episode with baited breath.

HBO is the biggest loser in the Netflix era, imo.

agreed, I've been saying the same thing for quite a while and I love the 10-13 episode series I get to binge without commercials

I also really love going to the movies but like you pointed out, most movies just feel rushed and the stories shallow due to the time constraints

Curious about what that is: Netflix's Derren Brown: Sacrifice Is an Utterly Bizarre, Ethically Questionable, Totally Gripping Must-See

Quote:
A man from Florida is told he is one of six people who have been chosen to participate in a life-changing experiment involving a microchip implant that will influence his pituitary gland to make him more decisive and effect positive change in his life. He eagerly accepts the challenge. He does everything that’s asked of him. He trusts the process. He listens to the conditioning audio and records his thoughts in a video diary. He’s excited about it, prepared to challenge himself. He has no idea how challenged he is actually going to be.

In real life, there are not six experiment subjects, just one. And there’s no chip. Phil, the guinea pig, has been selected because, during an intake process that involved hundreds of applicants for the “enhancement,” he stood out for his bigoted views about “immigrants,” especially immigrants from Mexico and Cuba. Brown’s plan? To recondition this “but I’m not a racist or anything” dude so that he will literally take a bullet to protect an undocumented Latino “immigrant.”
Watching the psychological reprogramming of Florida Man sounds pretty hilarious tbh
