There's a new Netflix Original: The Confession Tapes.

It's a documentary style series with 40-60 minute episodes covering cases of (mostly) false confessions.

For some reason I find police interrogations really fascinating, so if you're in the same boat or just like true-crime docs this might be up your alley.

Only watched 2 episodes but they were both pretty good. The psychological dynamics are really nutty when a lot is on the line. In one of the episodes I watched an informant played up a group of friends from a specific street as a 'gang', and coincidentally a murder happened on that very street some time later. By the end of it all, the police seemed genuinely convinced that a huge proportion of the residents in one neighborhood were part of some secret gang and started trying to bring them all down.

Because of the plea bargain system they all start agreeing to testify against each other for things that never happened in exchange for short time. In the end it appeared like 7-8 guys were sent to jail for being part of a gang that didn't even exist and committing various crimes they didn't do.

Anyways, It was pretty good but not great, I'd file the series under my list of things to watch if you can't think of anything else to check out.

The mental pressure of interrogations and the flawed, coached, "eye witness" testimony really make me wonder how many innocent people were put away before the advent of DNA and security cameras. If you were in the wrong place/wrong time scenario the justice system could, and still can, put you away.

If I ever get accused or interrogated I will just demand a lawyer and stfu.

I've been enjoying a lot of stand up lately. Right now watching Joe Mande. I could not tell from the little icon but he is in fact not the little guy with the ultrahot wife on the league. Enjoying it still though.

The anti-The Cove documentary by the Japanese is quite...interesting? It's almost like watching straight propaganda

For those that watched Last chance U season 2, the anger-issues running back Isiah Wright and his older brother were arrested on murder charges. Allegedly stabbing some dude multiple times

Older brother was the team manager right? That's a shame, he always seemed like the calming influence.

No, it was the other brother. The one that played at Indiana, not the manager. He came across pretty good in the few interviews with him, more surprised that he was involved than Isiah. Such a shame, feels bad man.

Fractured was good. Not great, but watchable, Hopkins was his normal character. Gosling was not bad either.

I started watching ''American Vandal'' and damn i gotta say they nailed it in terms of spoofing the Crime Documentary Style. Some people won't get it, but if your into mockumentaries, its really good. Reminds me of a long form version of the shown ''Documentary Now''

The Rafay murders are interesting for a lot of reasons. This netflix documentary mainly focuses on confessions and is quite biased in promoting their innocence. This was a big story; Dateline & 48 Hours did documentaries on the case years ago. I watched the 48 Hours one after the Netflix one. It's good to watch because you can see how the biases of both producers influence the outcome of the documentaries. If you watched the Netflix one you might leave thinking they are innocent. If you watch the other ones you would lean to them being guilty.

Yah, also regarding the 8th Street Gang episode, you might be left thinking they're innocent, but even the Supreme Court upheld the initial verdict after considering the new evidence available.

Agreed. I watched one or both of those when they aired and recall being led to believe that they were definitely guilty.

Narcos producer killed while scouting locations in Mexico

Quote:
A seasoned film location scout hired by Netflix for the upcoming fourth season of the series Narcos has been found dead in a remote area in the state of México.

The bullet-riddled body of Carlos Muñoz Portal, 37, was found in a vehicle in the town of San Bartolo Actopan in the municipality of Temascalapa. There was evidence that he had been chased by his assailants.

A friend of Muñoz told the newspaper El País that all he knew was that the location scout had left Monday to look for shooting locations in the state of México. He was alone and carried only a camera to shoot photographs of promising landscapes.

A lone man shooting pictures in an area known for real-life narco violence might have been suspicious for local drug lords, but the truth might be hard to find as no witnesses have come forward given the remote location of Muñoz’s murder.

Binged the rest today with my gf, we loved it. It's way beyond dick jokes, imo this is one of the best new shows in awhile; it starts off as amazingly funny satire of the Serial/The Jinx/etc type of show and by the end gets surprisingly smart and self-aware in what it says about the people involved, all of whom are realistic characters. Highly recommend.
