I really loved The Magicians books when they first came out but I was a little disappointed by the syfy show. If you're the kind of person that reads fantasy, I would say the books are worth a read even if the show isn't your cup of tea.

Even though I enjoyed season 2 for the most part, I quit immediately after how season 2 ended, which was apparently the right call.

Turbo Kid 7/10

In a post-apocalyptic wasteland in 1997, a comic book fan adopts the persona of his favourite hero to save his enthusiastic friend and fight a tyrannical overlord.

It's really campy, light hearted, and pretty fun. Over the top gore and overall goofiness which is part of the fun.

"In Order of Disappearance," is the best dark comedy that I've ever seen. It surpasses Prizzi's Honor in my opinion. It's a Norwegian film so most will have to read subtitles.
The psychopathic villain is brilliantly played and his part is brilliantly written. The director is clever in that you don't realize that this revenge drama is a dark comedy until you see subtle things such as - the extremely wealthy villain, living in a luxurious house happens to have the absolute worst taste in art humanly possible, so bad it makes you laugh, etcetera. The whole film took my breath away in little pieces of cleverness that I haven't seen before.

In order to let people know my taste in movies, I'll list my top five in no order:
Back to the Future
Animal House - dated now, but at the time superb.
The Godfather
Ground Hog Day
The Ten Commandments - Charlton Heston version

Note that two of my favorite top five are time travel tales so hence my bias.

thanks for the heads up I love black comedy n love stellan skarsgard.
just curious tho u mention time travel, does this film have anything to do with time travel?

also, this doesn't have anything to do with Netflix but if you enjoy black comedies check out death to smoochy and drowning mona.

both are fantastic.

The film has nothing to do with time travel. Earlier in the thread, people were going back and forth about Travelers and I was on the side of the yays without giving any reasons.

Hey thanks for the two picks. Another fantastic dark comedy is the second season of Fargo.

Just saw Trainspotting for the first time last night - speaking of dark comedies. It was just okay for me. Nothing I would recommend.

I've never seen so many wrong words strung together in a row.

Someone turned me on to Black Mirror and described it as a modern-day Twilight Zone or Hitchcock, with each episode standing on its own. 5 episodes in and I think it is pretty great in a creepy/cringy way, which I am a fan of.

All solid so far except for maybe the Waldo Time episode.

S1/E1 really sets the tone for the whole series.

I understand it is considered a great movie and critically acclaimed. I love dark comedies - Pulp Fiction and Fight Club are two of my most favorite movies - but I just didn't get this one.

I'm on S3/E3 and my high point was 'The Entire History of You'

Agree with Waldo being a disappointment.

Ha Ha! Great burn buddy. I haven't seen Trainspotting because I've had my own issues, but genres are a continuum, they overlap and are never exact ( they are just a model). I'm surprised people would give you a hard time just because of an opinion.

Just watched the Neal Brennan: 3 Mics special. I thought it was brilliant and hilarious. I haven't enjoyed a standup special this much since the last Norm MacDonald one.

btw I can see Trainspotting as a dark comedy, but your main error there was not appreciating how great a movie it is. Or even liking it, cmon.

Just saw Schitt's Creek was posted to Netflix. It's Eugene Levy, Catherine O'hara, and Chris Elliot in a TV series about a rich family that loses all their money and is forced to live in some crappy town full of weird people.

Levy plays his usual nice guy character trying to deal politely with horrible people. O'Hara is great as the entitled wife who can't change and there are some great scenes with Elliot who plays the Mayor of the town.

Schitt's Creek is gold. The 2 "kids" are the best part.

Actually I'm surprised I didn't like it as much as most everyone else because dark comedies are my favorite genre but it just didn't connect with me. This probably doesn't have anything to do with it but I had to turn on captioning in order to understand what was being said. Maybe that diverted my attention just enough.

Yeah, I always watch the British/Irish movies with captions on. That's cool, people disagree about arty stuff.

I couldn't get into Cranston being the villain. Nerdy, desperate high school chemistry teacher bad guy worked for him. Corrupt cop tough guy doesn't imo.

It was pretty good and I look forward to season two, though.

I thought he was perfect in the role and absolutely crushed it.
