I noticed a Stephen Hawking 3 part series was up. Being an amatuer physicist I watched the first 2, I thought they were well done primers on basic physics like time and space.

+1

Only 2/3 of the way through but so far pretty interesting and enjoyable to a layman like me.

Its not on Netflix, but if you can find it online, the Stephen Hawking "Does god exist?" show was quite well done.

Has anyone ever watched "Forks Over Knives"? It's been on WI for a while, here's a link to the movie's site:

http://www.forksoverknives.com/

It's a documentary giving the health benefits of a "plant-based" diet. I was curious to watch because my father just made me read "The China Study", which also advocates a plant-based diet (it's the one Bill Clinton is on as well).

Related aside, I would read "The China Study" - you may end up disagreeing with the science, but it's an easy/quick'ish read with some interesting research citation.

The China Study is awful "science," read it for an example of what not to do as a scientist - I guess. http://rawfoodsos.com/2010/08/06/fin...response-html/

edit: same person reviewing Forks over Knives.

js - I read this rebut of The China Study (it's not the only one questioning the methodology of various research cited in the book). Seems smart.

But to say The China Study cites "awful" science seems a bit harsh, imo. And generally speaking, the overall points it makes are probably good to be reminded of for overall health (basically eat lots of fruits/veggies).

Don't want this to turn into a derail btw - I'm not a vegetarian, not even close and don't have a strong opinion about people adopting "100% plant-based/whole grain/legume diets) - just think it's worth a read for those of us who aren't that strong in nutritional information (and are not willing to accept China Study as gospel).

Yeah, that is fair. Nothing wrong with exposing one's self to different points of view/information but necessary to stay critical and question what is presented, read not only The China Study but also criticism and make up one's own mind.

Ricky Gervais apparently called it the best show on television. The first season is plenty funny but the first ep. of Season 2 was brilliant. Hope that continues.
Peep Show: Watched the first 10 minutes of first episode before work today. Laughed several times. Will keep on it!

Blu Ray releases in january, so I'm pretty excited for that

Im a bit late on the Limitless dicussion, but the thing that annoyed me the most:

Spoiler:
He murders some random hooker in a hotel room, and there are no consequences whatsoever and it doesnt add much to the plot. WTF was the point of that scene?

Also, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good US history stuff. Ive been watching history channelesque type stuff, but Im looking for more of an acted version, like characters portraying events, rather than historians explaining it with 10 seconds of acting it out.

Only watched the first episode of Story of Us, but iirc, that's a pretty good fit for what you're looking for.

Ive been watching that, its pretty good, but I mean more like, fictional? Not fictional, but where its entirely a narrative film with characters, and not neccessarily "educational" As a piss poor example, the southpark episode where cartman goes back in time to when the constitution is signed. He is there living it with the characters, not having historians doing talking heads about it.

Looks like some cable company's are thinking about adding a "Netflix tax" to people that use a high amount of bandwith associated with instant streaming.
