Re: Netflix "Watch Instantly"

Heat
Che (Benicio and Sodenberg's Biopic)
Awakenings
Monsters Inc.
Patton (One of the best Biopic's ever made. And a killer performance by George C. Scott)
A Bridge Too Far (Classic War film, only available until end of Jan.)

And a silghtly cheesy, slightly abscure, but utterly hilarious Al Brooks film:

Defending Your Life.

The concept is that after you die, you basically go to a sort of trial where you defend actions in your life, with the goal being to move on to the next stage in life. If you lose and don't convince the arbiter, you go back and essentially restart your previous "level" of existence.

Brooks is basically a guy who lived his life fearful and insecure. The movie revolves around examining parts in his life where he let his insecurity defeat him, and he has to defend himself and the actions. Very funny movie punctuated with poignant moments. Here's a short scene that gives you an idea of the tone of the film:

Wings of Desire.

City of Angels was a remake of it, and basically took out all the subtlety and artistic merit then warped it into a cheesy chick flick. Wings of Desire is just beautifully shot, and has a great performance by Peter Faulk.

Someone just tipped me off that the show "The Brotherhood" is streaming, seasons 1 and 2. Looks like I got a new show to watch to fill in the gap until Mad Men season 3 comes out.

Re: Netflix "Watch Instantly"

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but I just started watching Party Down, an original comedy on Starz.

I didn't know Starz had original programming, but I learned about the show from this article on the Onion AV Club site. So far it has been one of the better comedies I've seen recently.

+4 for Party Down! Quoting my own post because I just burned through the first 5 episodes (had only watched first 2 when I originally posted). This show is really, really funny and, being on Starz, there is swearing and nudity. FTW.

Re: Netflix "Watch Instantly"

If you are a fan of fantasy novels or just cheesy sci-fi in the Hercules/Xena warrior princess tradition check out the TV show legend of the Seeker based on Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth Series. As I said it is a bit cheesy but it was still pretty cool being able to finally see what a Mord-sith looks like.

Re: Netflix "Watch Instantly"

Just found this thread. One of my favorite movies I've seen in the past year is available for instant streaming in HD. It's a foreign title called "Sin Nombre" that revolves around 2 characters who's paths eventually cross as they flee for the US. One is a teenage Honduran boy in the MS13 gang (notorious latin american gang) and the other a teenage Honduran girl.

If you've seen City of God and enjoyed it you'll like this flick as much if not more. It's in Spanish with subtitles but the dialogue isn't too heavy so it's not bothersome. If you watch it, please post your thoughts!

_____

If you like stand up comedy, these are available for instant streaming as well:

Daniel Tosh - Completely Serious (think i've watched this 10 times and still can't stop laughing each time)
Zach Galifianakis: Live at the Purple Onion

IIRC there was a big-ass adult bookstore in Nashville called the Purple Onion, would be awesome if it's where he recorded his show
