Not everything needs be a mystery. The predictable nature of the terrible consequences that follow the bad decisions the main characters make
is the plot, it's what gives you the feeling of dread and tension that drives the last 2/3rds of the movie.
There's no twist, the village isn't the village from The Wicker Man, nobody is secretly in Al Qaeda, it's just two everyman protagonists doing normal 30 year old bro **** and then everything goes real bad and just keeps getting worse. You aren't there to learn what happens next, you can do that in 2 minutes on Wikipedia reading the plot summary. You're there to experience the ride. That's the genius of the movie, that is it so stripped down.
