The book is incredibly well written. I thought it might be difficult to turn into a good movie, but apparently they did well with it.

Really enjoyed this. Very well done film.

The Outsider

Jared Leto as an American former POW in Japan post-WW2 who joins the Yakuza.

Pro: atmospheric, loved the cinematography and the Yakuza traditions.

Con: who the **** is Nick (Leto) and why does he join?

Not quite an actioner and not quite a character study. Not sure what the movie was trying to achieve.

But I liked it.

It is strange that they give almost nothing of Nick's backstory. Flashbacks would have been helpful.

I thought it was okay. I'm a sucker for anything set in Japan. If it were any other setting, I probably wouldn't have finished it.

The Punisher

Thanks for the rec. I enjoyed this. It executes its premise pretty well (revenge style; shoot em up action). Some action scenes were John Wick-esque, which I enjoyed as well.

Cons: Could be a little over the top at times but then I remember it is a superhero show after all

Water & Power: A California Heist

Recommended for anyone who enjoyed Dirty Money.

The issues explored might be local to California now. But water scarcity is becoming global.

Annihilation

If I understand it correctly this is running in cinemas in the US right now, but the international distribution is done on the Netflix platform.

Anyway, I can highly recommend this for people digging stuff like "Monsters" or "Alien". With Natalie Portman as the lead, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Oscar Isaac.

Water scarcity is far less of a concern than the hysteria over peak oil.

Earth has exactly the same amount of water on the planet as it did billions of years ago.

The technology already exists to deal with any short term lack of clean drinking water in a specific place- pipes (and maybe a desalinization plant).

Will give that Water & Power a watch. Iirc, California has such strict regulations regarding the construction of power and water plants, that it may always be a big net loser in these as a state.

Cali also has crazy laws which let argi-businesses get first dibs on water supplies, so almond farmers (or whoever) can use up most of the available water and leave little for the surrounding municipality.

I'm liking this Wind River, good call you thread people! Notice that the police chief is Kevin Costner's Indian pal from Dances With Wolves, a little older now.

Yeah, it went on Netflix everywhere except in the US. Their distribution or something fell thru for international stuff, and they did it this way.

They waited 3 weeks after it was released in US to take it to Netflix.
I heard it was pretty good. Will probably watch this weekend.

I just went and saw it in USA#1 movie theater less than 2 weeks ago. I believe it is still on its initial run.

I like cerebral movies like this one tried to be, but it had a couple of lolbad plot holes and I wasn't a big fan of the ending.

That's exactly this show's focus.

I was surprised, as much as California tries to be a people's utopia, they turn around and **** a significant segment of the population when it comes to water.

Ive watched thru 6 eps. gonna finish tonight. general thoughts on characters

Spoiler:

youngest guy is a total clown

shion is incredible. thought I would hate him but he is the coolest person in the house.

snowboarder guy seems alright but it tilts me that he is basically using the house to run and advertise his clothing business

ami is very cute. i like her. needs to be more assertive in life

mizuki is my favorite even though she tends to disappear from the action. i even enjoyed her ranting on yuudai. of course natsumi was my favorite girl her season so maybe Im just attracted to drunk rambling asian women.

hockey player is cool and Im happy that she is having some success in the house.

Agree with pretty much all of that, except

Spoiler:

Ami is lame and seems stuck up (agree she's cute though)

My wife finds Shion very unattractive (like legit repulsive, not just "not hot"), which I think is bizarre, he's an extremely good-looking guy. And yeah, def the coolest guy in the house by far

yeah, I dont know how much of her personality is being stuck up and how much is her trying to signal disinterest to a guy who simply cannot take a hint
