I'm interested in hearing what exactly everyone's gripe is with The Night Of. As someone who works in the criminal law field in NYC, I've been to Riker's many times. While some of the scenes are obviously exaggerated for TV, the general notions about Rikers are pretty real.

I strongly encourage everyone to watch the Time: The Kalief Browder Story on Netflix. It includes a deep look into what Rikers is really like.

Note that people with negative things to say are generally more vocal than people with positive things to say.

It's a very well liked show IME.

Everyone's already posted exactly what their gripes are. Also anytime you invoke this defense:

It's been awhile, but the show started off great and seemed like it was going to be very detail oriented and different than other crime/detective shows.
That turned out to not be the case at all. They barely got into the details and from what I remember blew through the court case in 1.5 episodes roughly. While you say the Rikers stuff was pretty real, it just seemed super rushed that he went from wide eyed kid to Tony Montona in 2 episodes.
I guess overall I felt like the show was going down one path through the first 2-3 episodes and then took a sharp left for the rest of the season.

LOOOOOOOOOOL at anyone even suggesting that the prison stuff was remotely accurate.
yes **** goes down in prison but almost no chance it's anything like what was depicted.

the idea that a black shot caller is taking an unaffiliated indian dude under his wing in that short period of time is just so ****ing stupid it's insulting.

and I'm not gonna even bring up all the stuff with the lawyer.

i watched Icarus after the Russia olympics news. absolutely fascinating stuff.

director is a really good cyclist who wants to know how people are systematically beating the drug testing system so thoroughly so he makes himself a test subject and prepares for a grueling amateur race (the stages are basically the worst parts of the tour de france).

he gets recommended to talk to a guy who is now famous for being the russia olympics whistleblower. **** gets crazy.

very very good.

Highly recommend this documentary.

*Off topic but I was in Cuba for the 1st time 3 weeks ago. I have a better understanding of the people after watching this. I don't feel so bad about getting ripped off by the taxis (I'm a nit for life) or the people constantly trying to sell you something. When talking with my host, they downplayed everything. Maybe it was so I didn't feel sorry for them or maybe it was because they didn't want to speak poorly about the government. Now I know because they are in the tourist industry, they are much better off than the average Cuban.
another +1

i would watch in this order
1. Icarus
2. Cuba and the cameraman

Was looking for a multi-demographic pleaser with my gf, mom, and brother and we settled on the Schitt's Creek pilot after a recommendation and supposed good reviews - we all thought it was terrible.

Looking forward to watching Icarus after so many good recs in this thread

Schitt's Creek is excellent. I can understand how people who don't enjoy that particular brand of humor wouldn't like it though.

Broadchurch S3 was very good. Sad that the series is over, but very happy that I got to watch it.

I gave up on Broadchurch because nothing was happening other than moral handwringing by every possible character with the usual skeletons in the closet of every character.

Should I give it another go?

I wanted to love Dark but stalled out after 3 ep's. I can't say I'm a huge fan of The Returned as I haven't even bothered to watch season 2, but by this point in s1 I was hooked and knocked the whole thing out over a weekend. Dark hasn't had that kind of pull at all.

The PBS doc on Voyager was fantastic! As was Jim and Andy, though after watching Jim on the Norm show a few weeks ago I expected him to be even more insane in this.

Jim and Andy left me super conflicted. Carrey came off as incredibly unlikable in ever scene outside of him just sitting and talking to the documentarians.

His rationale behind doing the **** he was doing with Lawler was way off. "this is what Andy would do." By all accounts, Andy and Lawler had a pretty good relationship outside of the stuff seen on Television. Sure, Andy seemed like he was ON all the time, because thats what he wanted people to see. When the cameras stopped, he seemed to be perfectly cordial with Jerry and they cooperated on what they were doing. He wasn't being an antagonistic ******* just to be one when the cameras weren't rolling.

And the stuff like being in character in front of Andy's family just seemed... weird. Like, the scene where he talks about meeting Andy's daughter (who had never met Andy before he died) and talking to her as though he WAS Andy was super weird and off-putting to me. You aren't a therapist Jim. Maybe you think you made that woman feel better, but it could have just as easily ****ed her up for you to act like that with her.

Maybe I'm overthinking it, but a lot of stuff just came off as cringey and self-indulgent. We get it, you're an ACTOR, but this method **** just makes it seem as though you're inconveniencing everybody else in order for you to be the center of the universe during that filming.

Yes, Carrey has become a little nutso in all interviews and it all goes back to this point in his life. He views himself as some kind of “joy guru” is the only way I can describe it.

For anyone trying to get into Dark, switch the language to German and turn on English subtitles as it's meant to be watched this way. I don't know why Netflix made it English dubbed as the default for that show.
Highly recommend this, if you enjoy stuff like True Detective, Twin Peaks, Stranger Things, 12 Monkeys.
