It's understandable to some degree due to the huge rewards that sports offers if you do make it but considering how difficult it is to make it you would hope that the students would jump at the chance to get an education which would mean a way out of poverty if their football dream didn't eventuate. Plus getting an education would mean hopefully less chance of being broke within no time of finishing their football careers and opportunities that they wouldn't have had otherwise.
It's an interesting show as it shows not only the obsession with sport but also the US fervour with religion. I probably find it most sad that these students are having their hands held to make it through the system when other students from just as disadvantaged backgrounds don't have that level of support.
It reminded me of my high school and how the guys who were good at football just cruised their way through, not making any effort and being excused for bad behaviour that would have resulted in other kids being suspended or expelled. This behaviour then continued on into their adult lives. Yet despite all this they are held up as role models. It really irks me tbh.
