No. I don't think he's that great in general. He seems (from what's in the films and from when I see him interviewed) very enamored with like comic theory and the
idea of what makes something funny. That's what leads to stuff like "my, what knockers" and characters with pun names.
As an example, with "my, what knockers" it's like "oh, I get it, knockers are the things on the door but it also means a woman's breasts" and then you force yourself to laugh. I still suspect that with many of these old comedies that don't really hold up, people are forcing themselves to laugh because they remember them fondly or they feel they're supposed to.
Examples of 30+ year old comedies that I think hold up better than Brooks are Pee Wee's Big Adventure, The Great Muppet Caper, and This is Spinal Tap.
