My sister is this way, to the point that she frequently won't even watch a movie unless captions are available, and I think it's an unreasonable expectation for the audience to have. Some scenes are filmed such that you're not supposed to be able to understand everything that was said. Some dialogue is intentionally indistinct, or at least recorded in such a way that you have to listen very carefully to catch it all, and even then you can't be sure if you heard everything right. Captions destroy the intended experience in scenes like that. (My sister also doesn't have the best hearing, and as far as that goes I can understand why she wants captions, but I also think she has an unreasonable expectation of understanding every single spoken word and gets upset when she can't, rather than accepting some verbal ambiguity as part of the experience.)
Not that I'd be opposed to having a subtitle option on Netflix. I agree that it would be a useful feature and something they should add for those who want/need it.
