I've had netflix for about a month now and this feature is pretty awesome.
They seem to be adding new videos fairly quickly.

Was not impressed with the quality on my (admittedly slow) 1.5Mbit DSL connection.

I've used this a bunch and the quality has been hit and miss. My guess would be that at certain times NF's servers getting higher traffic may cause them to reduce the quality. I've certainly had movies play at like 2 bars that appear close to 'dvd quality', at least on my monitor.

2nd the recommendations of King of Kong and Cocaine Cowboys, enjoyed them both. I've also been watching a few episodes of Forever Knight if anyone remembers that show.

Thanks for posting the links to the twin galaxies forums BTW, I'm curious to read those threads.

Random nitpick I guess, but the Watch Instantly feature didn't work for me; I got a cryptic error in IE, and then Netflix's site said I should run their DRM-resetting utility to fix it. I do that, and all of a sudden IE crashes anytime I go to the Watch Instantly page and Windows Media Player crashes any time I open any DRM-protected content, such as poker videos. Oops!

Wait time was like 30 minutes for tech support, but we finally fixed my DRM problems and the guy figured out that the problem was related to HDCP (a DRM copy protection scheme having to do w/ how data is transferred between devices). My 30" monitor does in fact support HDCP, but it turns out that in order to watch videos instantly, I have to change my desktop resolution from 2560x1600 to 1280x800, which of course ****s up all my desktop icons, not to mention is ******ed to begin with.

I tried to say to the tech support guy "uh, you know, this isn't that acceptable of a solution and you guys should really fix this" and he was like "yeah well it's a problem with HDCP and there's nothing we can do about it" which I'm pretty sure is BS.

An Evening with Kevin Smith

For noobs, Kevin Smith is the creator of Mallrats, Clerks, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob, etc.

I'm about 75 min into it and it's pretty darn good. The format of this is him doing a Q&A at various colleges, but it's actually quite entertaining and more like stand-up about his movies and life and stuff.

As of now, the selection on Watch Instantly is pretty much a huge joke.

I wonder what the process for getting them to that section is? Digitizing can't take that long. I imagine it's an issue ot getting the rights?

Haha, believe me, I tried in Firefox first but they don't support that yet.

I was up front w/ the guy about my 30" monitor. It's kinda funny when I talk to tech support people, he's like "right-click an empty area of your desktop, then click-" and I said "you want me to go to display settings right?" "Yep."

goofy I think I"m having the same problem as you. I wonder if it has to do with my 42" Dell LCD TV VGA-wired to my Dell 9300 Inspiron laptop?

Actually I think it's just a download problem but whatever amirite.

One of the things I learned at broadcast.com is that when you give thousands of choices on demand, people go to the little things that they couldn't find anywhere else. The sailing fan will choose the show about sailing over the blockbuster movie because they can't get the sailing show anywhere else. Or maybe they choose both. The problem is that when people all choose different things at the same time, its a huge bandwidth hog. Thousands of choices, thousands of people using different movies, particularly when the expectation is for HD quality, and there is a huge problem. The cost of delivery per movie if the system is used a lot is incredible. Unicasting DVD or higher quality video is an incredibly inefficient business. (Unicasting is where there is one connection per user to the movie being shown. Each user has to have his own bandwidth, they cant' share streams) It's why movie delivery over the net will never be a big business.
Funny he says that, since Netflix is basically hoping counting on him being wrong for their Watch Instantly business to succeed. That post is from 2004 though.

All I want to watch for the instant stuff are comedies and they have like no new good comedies for this feature. They have all this old crap Ive seen and tons of new stuff that Ive never heard of. Im bout to just get the blockbuster deal cuz waiting for the mail for a dvd I wanna watch now is pretty gay.

Lots of Herzog stuff on the list. Some decent docs (dark days, overnight, war of the century) and several non-ancient classics (killing fields, clockwork orange, 2001) tons of campy horror flicks as well. check out "the ten" and six string samuri

They seem to be adding options at a decent rate.
