This is lazy writing and the main problem with many shows. I'm willing to accept a sci-fi or horror premise, but then you have to stay within that. It's like setting the rules of the game and then not obeying them.
Latest Star Wars example - Rey pulls a starship out of the sky with the force, but 10 minutes earlier couldn't get her friends out of the equivalent of quick sand.
