If my dad was with some woman who had a serious gambling problem or some other unknown vice that crushed 100k per year, I'd be pretty concerned that she was taking advantage of my dad. I wouldn't necessarily take yim's line, but I wouldn't just assume the woman has it all under control and there won't ever be any repercussions.

These people are generally savers and her 401k alone was probably quite large. She also probably gets close to a max payment from Social Security, which, if she started taking at at age 66 would be around $33,000. It could be higher if she waited longer.

If she has 2 million dollars, she can generate a yield on that of about 2.25% taking almost zero risk. She can bump that up to 2.75-3% taking on very minimal risk.

If she has a pension of any kind, she can probably cover her gaming expenses easily. Even if she has no pension, she'd be fine for a very long time.

How is she looking health wise? Might not even be necessary for her to pay off the monthly minimum.

I would definitely intervene if my parents spent $100k/year on 1-2 websites, be it dirtyfilthygambling.com or totallyfreeplaymoneygames.com or spaceagegolfclubs.com or jewelencrusteddesignerhandbags.com. But it would be a direct intervention, asking them to show me the site (so I can make sure they know what they are being charged for), and a financial audit to make sure the spending is within their means.

If I were too chicken**** to do that, I would definitely not be going to sneak-contact their bank or install spyware on their computer. If I go to the bank, I will bring my parents and a letter from a court stating that I now have conservatorship over their finances, I will give my parents a big hug and we will all sit down with the 200 years of life experience accumulated between us and figure out a rational solution like adults.

In 96 when I had my first cashier job I was floored at how non chalant it was for children to use parents credit cards and the bosses saying as long as the parent ok the transaction go.
