Quite. They have their work cut out right now without having to investigate 100 million people.

Having been working this job for several months now - I can finally form an opinion on it I think, I don't like the job that much but I much prefer it to school.

Also the biggest problem with work is usually other people because in most workplaces you can't just tell them to go **** themselves.

Right now my routine is entirely centered around work so I am working on changing that with my therapist. I got a set of golf clubs that are in the mail right now. Going to basically leave work, go hit some balls, and not think about it until the next day.

It's a really miserable job though and my task is impossible. The good part is I am learning a lot and I have an opportunity to learn a ****ton. But it's definitely going to suck for the next 8-12 months until I decide I've learned enough to leave. It's going to really, really suck.

Why is your task impossible?

overly ambitious project, no infrastructure there that allows me to perform my actual role, some extremely difficult personalities, and organizational apathy

Sounds entirely typical for the corporate environment. Stuff is achieved despite all that.

^ This

I have faith in the captain that he'll learn to accept this at some point, however, and not let it take so much of a toll on him personally.

Haha, thats what I thought when I read that sentence, pretty much what I run into everyday as well. Costs a lot of energy though, if only people would just stfu more often and just listen amiright.

I would say jmakins situation is actually likely to be impossible since they are a small super ambitious startup. But that's even better imo.

Yeah, from my understanding of his role and the company, it actually is an almost impossible situation to really succeed.

we might run out of money before my failure becomes apparent. That would probably be the best case scenario for me, actually, ego-wise.

It's a freeroll for me, I have total freedom to do whatever I want and learn whatever I want, getting a huge exposure to a variety of CS disciplines, a touch of management experience, some exposure to the business end of things. I just need to not let the stress get to me at all. I am not used to failing at anything other than meaningful relationships.

I am a little concerned about their runway though. We lost 2 people in the last few weeks, and this place only has ~10 in the office on a good day. So that was very surprising to me. I don't think they were laid off but the timing is weird. I have a feeling it may have been a "hey, maybe you should move on." type of thing. They were both kind of low-performers and I wasn't even sure what their actual job was.

The fact that you're in a management role and a) don't know what 15% of the people there did and b) don't know why they aren't there anymore is a bit worrying. Usually managers in companies 3-4 times the size of yours know exactly what everyone's role is and when someone is going to be let go (unless it's for some confidential HR-related issue).

Not that this means you're doing anything wrong in your job, it's just unusual for a manager at such a small company to be left in the dark about much of anything.

As is typical in a startup there’s really poorly defined roles. On top of this, basically 0 supervision of anyones **** before I came in. These people were part of a completely different team managed by the other boss for a project that I dont really touch at all. Because it wasnt directly in my realm i didnt ask or make it my business.

Just don't let this turn into something you feel like you have ownership of so when it comes time for you to leave, you're like "man, it feels like family. Maybe I shouldn't leave, or maybe I can still give them two weekends a month" =P

Keep getting all the experience and education you can get from it while you can. I love this thread, btw.

That’s a good idea. Idk if i’d ever get there.

My deskmate, who a few months ago kind of tore me apart for being unqualified and overly ambitious/over my head pulled me aside today and said that he thought that I would do well here, that I am a “natural and enthusiastic learner” that “doesnt get prideful or defensive when you don’t know something” and that he thought i’d be alright.

Idk what I did but i think ive gained some props there lately, people are being very warm to me, except for the one problem person who really hates me.

Finally feeling like a peer at work and not just an intern. People are starting to notice all my work and it feels good. Definitely has been a rough last few months, now I'm finding my rhythm and feeling more confident/less lost I am enjoying it much more.

I've totally won over my seatmate; today he gave me superuser access to our infrastructure in case "he was gone and we needed someone else who knows how it works." My boss doesn't even have that.

Pushed a big refactor to our automated testing and it's working and is a huge improvement. Happy about that. My first project here was a huge failure, I need to take a second look at it and see if I can make it better. But tbh the thing we just refactored was mostly based on my original idea, so I don't feel that bad. I feel my skills are improving a lot every day.
