http://music.google.com/about/

Google is launching a cloud-based music system, but of course right now, it's by invitation only. Everyone can request an invitation on the website.

Looks pretty cool. You upload all your music and it's available for you on any computer or device with internet access. No syncing and other bull**** required. Everything, including playlists, is uniform across all devices. Interestingly, the most recently played songs will even be available in offline mode users can select specific songs they always want available.

On a very quick glance I didn't see anything about how much you can upload.

Currently Dropbox can do some of the same things, although unless you want to pay for it there's not enough size for a full library.

Seems like something the RIAA can't love, but then I also can't imagine Google didn't vet this with them somehow.

Requested an invite out of curiosity. I currently use Pandora, Grooveshark and Shoutcast for varying purposes. It would be great to have 1 source, though I'm not sure this will be useful to me as I don't own a ton of music.

Same here - I don't listen to a lot of music, so Grooveshark suits my needs, but if Google works well, it might be fun to rip all my CD's and upload them all so I have a cloud jukebox.

Until I can stream it in my car, music in the cloud isn't very useful to me.

yeah the biggest problem is that I really don't care about streaming. in my use portable use cases (airplane, maybe a subterranean gym with spotty access, in the car on long road trips with iffy 3g) streaming is somewhere between useless and hopefully good.

if you could permanently sync for offline use, now we're on to something

though, I requested an invite, b/c it would be cool to simply have a place in the cloud to put everything. right now I have my music on like 4 different devices that I keep around just in case hardrives start dying

Huh? I guess I'm not doing many cornfield road trips or workouts in the bat cave, but this would pretty much replace Pandora as what I use to stream at home, work, car, gym, etc.

it normally would work fine, but what if I'm in a plane? or there are spots on the way to Maine, vermont, etc where 3g breaks. (and at my desk actually 3g service doesn't work, though there is the office wifi) point is, I still need to get all the songs onto my device at some point, so I need another service for that. streaming isn't a complete solution

though, this is admittedly more of an issue for rented movies vs music

basically, if I have my device on me at all times (which I do) and I still want to keep offline versions of my music on it (which I need for plane rides, etc) then I don't see a big need for this, except as a storage place

Noah, as mentioned by another poster above, look into the Amazon MP3 cloud drive. I use that and it works pretty well on the Thunderbolt. It did take a few days to upload everything.

That's what I do. But I don't like leaving it in the car (ipod, not phone) and it's mildly annoying to plug it in if I'm making several stops. And I wouldn't otherwise even bring it with me when I'm going somewhere other than work.

I'm not even saying the car thing would be awesomness, but it would be nice. Otherwise the only time I'd use the cloud is at work, in which case my ipod is in my bag daily and I plug it in at my desk in the morning so it's no big help there.

You can play your "most recent" songs if you're offline, though I don't know how many songs that would be. You can also choose songs that you want to always be available offline.

I requested an invite, though I'm not sure how useful this will be. All of my music still fits on my 32GB iphone that I have with me at all times. While I'm getting close to full I expect 64GB phones out soon.

How much music do you have?

My phone came stock with around 35GB of usable space (8GB plus 32GB SD card included), which was enough for me. Don't think I'll ever carry around a music player again (except my super old ipod shuffle that I use for the gym).

I have about 20GB of music but the fail here is that my phone sucks. And I'm hooked on the ipod interface yet don't have an iphone.

IDK why I'd be willing to pay $20/$50/$100 a year for the Cloud drive when any phone with a micro SD slot is $50 away from being a 32GB mp3 player.

Or I could just use ORB and stream my whole library to whereever.
