I'm guessing not many people here watched last month's Rugby World Cup final repechage (so named as the qualification procedure has multiple layers of repechage):

The exact meaning varies by sport but it's a round or process for competitors who are still in it in some sense (not always able to still be outright champion but often they can) but the level is "capped" in some way because competitors with stronger results have already qualified for a later level of the championship.

A pure example would be our family 4-handed dominoes tournaments. 12 people enter so there are three semi-finals, winners advance and then there is a three-handed repechage between the people who finished second to decide the 4th spot in the final.
