I'd go the opposite way to you, that the whole idea of "relevant" is pretty close to "cool" in that someone is considered "relevant" if they have been in all the "must-see" movies that the cool kids go and see.
I'm admitting I'm not cool enough to follow fashion and other aspects of mainstream culture.
Not very familiar with hipsters but afaics it's just the latest mainstream fashion/lifestyle fad that second hand thinkers are telling each other is cool/relevant at the moment.

Not me, but that goes for the majority of the contestants (including Irina Shayk, one of my own nominees - I decided to look up the girl from the Agent Provocateur ad to see if we should nominate her). When I was single I used to live pretty much next to an old cinema (to give you an idea, a few years later it was considered easily adaptable to a 1940s war-torn look to make the "gimme the oscar" scene in Atonement) and I went a long to see whatever film was on every week, so I would probably have known most of the contestants in Miss OOT 2001 if it had been held during that phase of my life, but not now.
The same probably goes for most of the voters - after all, none of the films we are talking about have been seen by the majority of people - even if we're talking just about the US rather than worldwide.
Had you heard of Ana de Armas prior to last year's competition?
