Hello everyone, I am thinking of moving to the UK or Ireland for a few months to play Poker live and online, I would like to hear your opinion about the best places I have heard about Nottingham and London in Uk and Dublin in Ireland as the best, but London is too expensive to live, does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks

North England is pretty cheap by British standards.

Nottingham? There's nothing in Nottingham. And Birmingham's a tip, except for the bourgeois bits where the 'breeders' live, which won't be what you're after. Manchester's not too bad, though I'm not sure why you'd go there by choice. Newcastle's all right, but a bit out on a limb, and Durham, quite near there, is scenically marvellous, but there's not much to do.

Bristol... it's big and busy and people go on about it, but there's surprisingly little happening after 6pm and it just looks like an anonymous collection of modern shoebox buildings because the bloody Luftwaffe basically destroyed it in the war.

Dublin is fabulous.

57 on red nails it. If I were moving back to the UK and couldn't afford London, I'd go to Manchester. It's trendy, has a good music scene and great nightlife. Plus I love the Mancunian sense of humor - it's very dry even by British standards.

Apparently London is suffering from 2 acid attacks a week right now (where a perp throws acid on you and then steals your stuff while your face melts). So if you end up there keep your head on a swivel.

Dublin is extremely expensive, especially housing.

Yeah my first thought was Ireland but afaict it's basically Dublin plus a bunch of villages, and Dublin's expensive. What's Ulster like? I like Glasgow but it's probably pretty similar to Manchester with marginally worse weather and a different accent. I only just now realized there are no decent cities in the south where the weather's more acceptable.

Cardiff might be alright if you don't mind the Welsh.

Manchester if you want a big city, somewhere like York if you want it a little more chilled. Liverpool if you want to roll about laughing when people open their mouths.

Merck's Quality of Life index put Dublin at 34th and London at 41st. They are the two highest ranked in the UK and Ireland.

Gambling isn't legal in Northern Ireland so Belfast probably isn't a good place to move to play poker.

I live here and I do not keep my head on a swivel. Acid attacks are a gang thing, due to an idiotic relaxation in the laws on selling corrosive acids and the fact that police are rather hard on anyone carrying guns or knives. If you're not a drug dealer and not involved in a turf war you're fine, just like me.

Oh yes, right, Victoria Coren likes it.

Still, you're about two hours from civilisation (i.e. London) by train.

I hear good things about Dusk Till Dawn Casino in Nottingham, plus Forest was my favorite English team when I was growing up because of the associations with Robin Hood (and they were a good bandwagon to jump on In the late 70s), so I think you should move there. Here's an interview with the guy who runs the casino.
