As spurious said Portugual may or may not be a good choice. But just to disagree, I lived in some countries with lower living standards and gdp/capita (Argentina, Latvia, South-Africa) and truthfully as long as you have $ to pay for a nice appartment/good healthcare/nice restaurants (and I suppose OP has) you can maintain the exact same standard of living as in the Western World.

For the rest of Europe,
As a French man living in Germany I can only advise living here. People are friendly, speak decent English for the most part, are open minded and welcoming. I just feel very comfortable and welcomed here, I never got any remark about being a foreigner (although I guess it may be different if I was Turkish). Infrastructures are VERY GOOD and things generally work out very well. Cities are safe and wealthy, and social relations generally peaceful and easy. Netherlands/Scandinavia/Austria are also good choices (though expensive ones moreover for Scandinavia), but it all depends what you are looking for.

Do not live in the UK except if you like bad food, ugly people and poor teeth (sorry bras, no trolling intended)

I've always wondered how it works for an English speaking person to live in an European country not knowing its language, do you just go around speaking English? Aren't people bothered by that?

I do speak a little bit of Portuguese and could probably get to being fluent in not too long. Also I have tattoos in Portuguese and that will make the local women want to sex me.

In order to get a job, you would definitely need to learn the language, but why would we be bothered by it? It's not like people will remember you, unless you live in a small town/village, but then again you wouldnt be living their as a foreigner.

Nowadays, every high school in Germany is expected to speak English, so it wont cause too many problems.

You should of course still learn the language because it makes things so much easier for yourself.

Rule number one. Try not to refer to it as Euroupe

Your in portugal chattin to a local and you say, "Yeh euroupes great"

You will come across as a sterotypical insular american.

Is this true? And does the law say "for the most part"?

To be fair, my perception was probably tainted because I lived in Europe during a heightened period of anti-American sentiment ('02 to the middle of '05), and I was in the military. I got plenty of "why did you start the war?" type questions, as if I personally had some sort of say in the matter. I'm very laid back, so yeah, I assume the hostility I did get had something to do with being American and military during a pretty unpopular military action.

That said, I love Europe and have been back several times since I left.

I talked to some family about this today and they say as long as he's not getting a job or anything he can stay for a long time without worrying about a visa.
No. It's fine until someone notices and then it's not so OK anymore.

As long as you're using that passport and traveling around, if any customs agent in the EU notices, there might be trouble. When this goes poorly, you get barred from traveling to Europe for up to like 10 years. It might work out OK but there's a really significant chance it won't. If you tell your friend "nah, dude, I guess you're supposed to get a visa but I'm sure it'll be fine," you're ****ing him over.

Yeah, pretty much this.

This, i've been to Lisboa, porto, Faro and albufeira and compared to other EU countries, it wasn't as appealing to a person that still wants to experience life and have fun.

If you just stop people in the street and say "HEY THERE CAN YOU HELP ME?" or order everything from shops without even saying hello in the native tongue, then yes, most probably. Learn the basics, make a bit of an effort and people are normally more than willing to help. People are often willing to help/talk English purely to further their English skills.

You should say "it's great to be in one of the PIIGS" instead.

I was in Germany in 03 and had my passport stolen. Had to get an emergency from the US embassy in Prague. On my flight out of Munich back to the US, got held up because I didn't have an entry stamp in my emergency passport and came very close to being detained until they could determine how I entered the country. Don't just assume you can go to a first-world country and talk your way through immigrations.

OP a good way to fit in with Portuguese culture is with this watch

IWC Portuguese. Everyone will know how serious you take their culture and traditions and girls will jump all over your dick.

Are Portuguese girls really not hot? I figured they would be since it's so close to Spain and that's some fineass purebred pussy right there.
