Many do.

- Is it really more cost effective to ride, say, a 600cc sportbike compared to an SUV? My SUV got about 18mpg on average, and insurance was about $80/month. I'm 22, single, and have never been in an accident, pulled over, or anything like that but I have to assume being under 25 and riding a motorcycle won't help me with insurance rates. From my preliminary research it seems like the savings would be negligible but I'm positive that a Honda or Yamaha will be more reliable than my current turd.
My bike costs me $600 a year to insure. I have no coverage on the bike itself, but wtf a bike is less than $10k to replace so insurance would be ridiculous. Just get the liability, medical for you, and take a safety course.

- How dangerous is it, really? I'm a very good driver, have a ton of experience with fast/dangerous vehicles as I used to race cars (including one class of car that was powered by a 1000cc bike engine when I was a teen!), went to the dunes and the motocross track on my ATV, etc. Obviously this experience is different from anything else I've done, but I feel I'm better prepared than the average dude.
You're 22. When you realize that people really can't catch you you might get stupid. Being a good driver doesn't necessarily mean much, since it's a whole different ballgame (as far as I'm concerned). Assume they're trying to hit you and grow eyes up your ass if you're going slow on side roads. Learn ESP to negotiate any intersection. Assume everyone will pull out right in front of you. Ride like you're invisible.
In a car people see you and will avoid you. On the bike they really don't. It's not even their fault. Getting mad about it will just make you angry and ride like ass.

- I live in Arizona. Am I going to be miserable during the summer? Honestly, this might biggest hurdle for me. I've had a car without A/C for a short period of time during summer and it was awful. Is it that noticeable while riding? For auto-racing helmets we had fresh air systems - do they make something similar for motorcycle riders?

I don't mind the heat as much as the cold. When you're going 130 the wind will cool you off fast. Need to stay hydrated, though. Cold sucks balls. Riding from LA to Vegas in the middle of winter, when it's like 20 on the pass feels like -40 at speed (in my imagination, but it's damn cold).
If you ever get a bike and make it up to vegas, and I happen to be in town that weekend, I'll gladly show you some pretty solid rides. I need excuses to ride more, but damn I gotta work so much and travel is a bitch.
