Iniesta scored the winning goal in the 2010 WC final and was a key player for the 2 Euro wins either side of that. What has Messi ever done in the WC? I'm not saying he's better than Messi but there are lots of criteria to consider and I think it's clear that internationally Messi has under achieved, so can he really be considered the GOAT? Maradona lifted a mediocre Argentina to win the '86 WC and imo he was a better player than Messi.

Agreed. I think iniesta knows that Messi is outclassing him out through sheer genius plays. He is not on the same level mindwise. That's what seperate good players from great. The mindgame.

And how do you want to measure this. They started at the same age imo. Both worked hard their whole career.

As to the respect. Messi had it more difficult to overcome several obstacles.

First off ronaldo has an athletic body that allows him to jump higher than most NBA players!

Messi has to run more and has to invest more energy to outrun people bigger than him. Alone the length of the legs should tell u this.

Put both on a race track to run 100m you will see what disadvantage is for Messi to outrun ronaldo. He has legs that are twice his size.

Yet he manages to be the better player.
So in regards to respect I think Messi deserves it.

Nobody "outclasses" Iniesta, even though there are obviously better players. If you're talking about "the mindgame", how much mental fortitude do you need to score the winning goal in a WC final near the end of extra time against a Dutch side who came seriously close to ending it with Robben at least twice?

In fact, how much has he even done in the Champions' League for that matter? I don't follow the game anywhere near as much as I used to but I'm struggling to think of a great Messi performance in a key CL game.

I guess I can see how you make a case that Ronaldo is a better goal-scorer. I think you would be wrong, but it is at least reasonable. When you add in Messi's vision, dribbling, and passing, it doesn't seem close to me. I'm astonished that Messi only has 31% more assists than Ronaldo. I assume half of Ronaldo's assists come from when he cannons it off the post or keeper and someone taps in the rebound. I guess it you compare in on a per match basis, it is more obvious. Ronaldo gets an assist about every 5 matches and Messi gets more than 1 per 3 matches,

Messi has scored some of the most important goals for his team. Iniesta is a top player but he doesn't have the vision or the skills if a Messi.

And he is not done yet with Argentina. It wouldn't surprise me if he gets the worldcup to Argentina in the following years.

I can only assume Messi didn't run that well in the worldcup and that he will run better in the future.
I think he is getting better although not supposed to due to age and primetime.

It could be that Messi is stagefright when playing with Argentina bc it's just too much pressure or that he doesn't have that connection anymore to his country. Spain is his home since he is 13 now.
