"(CNN) Multiple people were killed in a shooting during a video game tournament at a shopping and dining complex in downtown Jacksonville, Florida, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said Sunday afternoon.

Preliminary reports say 11 people were shot, four of them fatally, at the Jacksonville Landing, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the incident.

One suspect, identified only as a white man, is dead at the scene, Sheriff Mike Williams said at a news conference, adding that there were no outstanding suspects. The Sheriff's Office said on Twitter there were "multiple" fatalities and "many" transported to hospitals."

I feel that it's only a matter of time before someone targets a poker event.

This is the initial reaction from some poker players on Twitter as well.

I think this happen in the Philippines last year, I remember playing in WSOP in Vegas and having discussion about at the table in the RIO.

fox news spent the better part of last week obsessing over the murder of one young person so i imagine they're gonna be all over this, and discussing what congress should do to prevent this from happening in the future and trump will of course tweet a bunch about it.

I don’t really play sports games.

I’ve been saying this for years. Posted about it here a bunch only to be generally mocked as being paranoid. Or a typical naive response of “why would anyone target poker players?”

I’ve also contacted the WSOP 2-3 times per year via email and twitter for the last 5 years or so voicing my concerns. I make it clear that I don’t expect details of their security measures but a response saying precautions have been taken would suffice. No responses ever.

I know it’s unpopular but we really need metal detectors at the doors, increased security, and increased use of dogs. You have a lot of money on the line, emotions running high, out of control egos, and guys being free to wear large backpacks all over the place. Recipe for disaster.

We already had a poker player this year wish death upon Vegas tourists and say that "he wishes that he could be the one to arrange their deaths". People on here donated to help him get on his feet once released from jail.

Is a mass shooter more likely to target the main event? I want to know when the safest time is to plan next year's trip. Maybe I should go earlier so fewer eople have gone broke.

Obviously more bad beat jackpots are needed.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has released the name of the shooter -- David Katz, age 24 of Baltimore, Maryland.

JSO also confirmed that Katz was at the event at some point earlier Sunday. Multiple reports that Katz had lost his match Sunday, leading to speculation whether that was the reason behind his actions.

Katz was recognized in February 2017 on the Buffalo Bills official Twitter account after winning the Madden '17 Bills championship.

We dodged a bullet (no pun intended) that this wasn‘t a Call of Duty or similar shooter tournament. We wouldn’t hear the end about violent video games.

I'm not going to listen, but I imagine it included the players calling each other ******s, and mentions of rape and killing towards one another on their headsets, then shooting breaks out.

Hot take, but this is what happens 100% of the time in every online gaming experience. I don't subscribe to the "Video Games = increase in violence" theory, but there is definitely something to the desensitization of human interaction in online gaming culture. On the surface, you see a bunch of "nerdy", highly intelligent introverts who excel at eSports who are seemingly harmless. For anyone that's ever played any form of online gaming, you know that as soon as you plug in and turn on the audio you enter a world full of extreme hate speech where you're subject to the N-word and Rape threats the entire duration of your gaming session.

An interview with one of the players who defeated David Katz in the Jacksonville Madden NFL '19 event is below.

* Witness says David Katz was "weird all weekend."

* Witness says shooter wore same outfit during Day 2 of the event (the day of the shooting) as he did for Day 1.

* Upon losing the Madden NFL '19 match, David Katz refused a "gg" handshake with the witness.

* Witness says weapon used by David Katz had an "infrared laser" and that Katz appeared to be "targeting" victims and that the shooting seemed "premeditated." However, the witness confirms that both he and the other player who defeated Katz in the tournament were not shot. (The witness says that Katz did point the weapon in his direction, which forced the witness to take cover).

LOL that he could tell the shooter had an infrared laser.

It doesn't seem to be posted in this thread, on another forum there was a tweet posted with a video that was slowed down where you can see the laser pointer of the gun right before the shooting started. I'll see if I can find it.





edit: I found it and tried posting it but it's just not working for me, it's just 6 seconds and at the end you see the laser on a kid that is being videoed as he plays.
