Not top pros but I could imagine them making successful sports TV shows out of getting together a bunch of college kids who want to be drafted and the audience votes like American Idol and the winners actually get a spot on a pro team. They could be tested and quarantined first then it would be safe to be around each other.

I'm not motivated enough to argue or look up year-over-year death rates for the metro areas of San Fran, L.A., or Seattle, but it was here and spreading last year.

People said the regular seasonal flu was really bad this year and it was probably a combination of that and COVID19. More deaths in the elderly were probably attributed to the bad flu season. If there were not more deaths (which is highly doubtful) then it must have started slowly in the colder weather.

You cba to look up any factual objective evidence to support your case but know 100% its true based on anecdote.

As Dawn flies to NY, she thinks perhaps once she sees Hugo she'll get a better idea of her true feelings for him. Meanwhile Jared worries, is she going to New York to break up with him or to make up with him?

I wish I could wait and binge a whole week's worth of Mary at once, but with a story this compelling there's no way I have the self-control to not check in every day

The week in NY started off great for Dawn and Hugo, but things have hit a bit of a snag. It seems Hugo may just be too French for Dawn. I mean, he's not wrong, but it's not Dawn's fault you're an idiot who orders bouillabaisse in NY.

Maybe cut back on being a pompous ass when you're on a date.

If that weren't bad enough, the next day Dawn gets excited about some Star Wars thing:

Hugo's response?

Spoiler:

Things are not looking good for Hugo right now.
Spoiler:

Maybe this weekend they can turn things around. Otherwise I don't see much of a future between these two!

I think after last night it's too late even for that. They went to a Broadway show. Dawn loved it but the Frenchman was like, it was okay

What a useless Sunday comic. A bunch of panels copied from earlier in the week followed by "I'm in a great city with a great guy, why aren't I happy?" The comments, however, were great.

Quote:
There are lots of reasons Dawn isn’t happy; let’s list a few. She’s not very bright. Indeed, as her father Wilbur is fat, Dawn is stupid. Very, very fat; very very stupid. Then there’s the question of her emotional maturity. Most young women in their early 30’s, after 12 years in a community college and having survived the sinking of a ship, with hundreds of corpses bobbing nearby, who spent a year with an older man as his submissive in Italy, would have gained insights from her experiences. Apparently Dawn hasn’t. Finally, there’s the question of her personal taste. She is moping over Jared. Jared is a nerd with bad teeth and a broken nose. He LIKES Star Wars! Stupid, immature and with bad taste in men, Dawn is, not surprisingly, not happy. Maybe after a year of hanging from ropes in the air and calling Harlan, “Master,” she never will be.
Quote:
Well of course you aren't happy Dawn. You have two choices in men.

A. A handsome, sophisticated Parisian who is also an a**

And

B. A dweeb who isn't the brightest crayon in the box who probably has a Star Wars sheet set on his bed.

And

C.You live with your father who drinks mayo out of jars, and who loves singing with his girlfriend, and watching boxing while drinking wine coolers.

D. You've been in school forever.

And

E. Your best friend is a meddling old witch who gives bad advice, and platitudes, and horrible muffins out all the time.

Why should you be happy?
Plus dozens of grammar nits

She could have correctly concluded her thought with “I wish I were.” The subjunctive mood in English is used to form sentences that express wished-for, tentatively assumed, or hypothetical states. It’s one of those cases like the incorrect usage of I and me where correct grammar sounds wrong to many people.
Quote:
But Dawn is not expressing something in the subjunctive mood. The verb she is using here is not expressing something that is imagined or wished or possible. She is in fact unhappy. Thus, she might say, "I wish I were happy, but I am not happy." The first phrase in the sentence conveys the subjunctive mood; the second does not.

I think that Merriam-Webster provides the correct explanation: " 'Aren't I' is an accepted phrase for 'am I not' even though when the conjunction is broken down it appears to be short for 'are not I,' which does not agree with standard rules of
Quote:
There's no standard contraction for "am not" except in inversion, when it becomes "aren't". This is what's known as the "amn't gap" - since neither am nor aren't is exactly what's required in going from first person singular I am to the default negative form, there's a hole in the declarative sentence structure. You don't find "I amn't" used in the past as a written verb form (writing in dialect doesn't count), but the "gap" is challenged by linguists who find that "amn't" is used in spoken dialects in Ireland, Scotland and West Yorkshire.
Riveting stuff!
