So I did some digging and here's what I've gathered. Toby's marriage to Professor Ian starts promisingly, but then there was some drama. Ian teaches Shakespeare over at Local College. Jannie, a student, comes up after class to talk about how inspirational he is.
Jannie figures she can get an A based on her charm and doesn't do any work for the class.
Ian has to fail her. This doesn't go well.
Now Ian is sad and rather than talk to Toby about what's going on (typical guy, am I right!), he just mopes around and withdraws. Toby gets worried. She thinks he's having an affair with one of his students.
Mary has been trying, continuously, since the start of the year to get Toby to try talking with Ian about her anxieties. Finally she does. Ian has a hearty laugh at the idea that any student could be interested in him. Thanks to *Mary this story has a happy ending. Toby and Ian are extremely married. They’re happy that they are too. And they’ll even try this “communicating” thing, in case a problem ever comes up again, which it never will.
