I don't disagree with this, though I do avoid the topic with my parents.

grunching, but in case nobody has brought it up, a politics thread in OOT is a terrible idea and would turn the forum into regs arguing non-stop about politics like in SE.
03-06-2018 , 04:23 PM
It was never an idea that had any chance at all to get off the ground.

Chinese food eaters,

What's wrong with a fork?
03-06-2018 , 04:39 PM
I think you should really eat your food however you like. I only pointed out the chili oil/ soy sauce thing because its a more egregious faux pas than the order in which the dumpling is eaten.

Its kind of like debating whether nigiri should be eaten fish side down or rice side down while mixing your wasabi and soy in to a brownish paste.

Didace, are you really interested in the reason for no forks?
03-06-2018 , 04:52 PM
Gregorio, do regs argue non-stop about politics in SE outside of the SE Politics thread? I haven't encountered that in the NBA and Tennis threads.

Didace, of course people who can't use chopsticks can use a fork. I see little children do it all the time.

If you legitimately want to know what's wrong with it, I'd like to hear what amoeba has to say.

Amoeba, I agree that those things are the correct, traditional, authentic way to eat them. I was only saying not to worry about it, as it is still acceptable to eat them in the ways I described.

For example, I do eat nigiri fish side down, sometimes with fingers, sometimes with chopsticks. But I don't see Japanese people or sushi chefs look down at eating it rice side down, even at sushi nazi places. Soy sauce is different, you get explicitly told not to use it on most nigiri, other than those that come already sauced or a few where it is okay.

There’s a risk that you get very unlucky and you get served the soup dumpling right as she runs out of red vinegar or bowls. Then you’d face the embarrassing spot of her returning from the kitchen a couple minutes later with a little bowl of red vinegar for you, only to see that you’ve already consumed the soup dumplings.

Also picturing multiple orders. As patron said, can also see last 2-3 just going straight in for the soup explosion after cooling for a few minutes.

There's nothing wrong with a fork. Asians all over asia eat all manner of Western food with a fork, even pizza.

The reason forks and knives are not seen in traditional Chinese/Korean/Japanese table is because forks and knives resemble weapons of war and thus it would be uncouth to have such instruments at the dining table.

Whats funny to me is when Western hipsters go to a Thai restaurant and ask for chopsticks when chopsticks don't really appear in Thai dining.

27,

The best is when you get to that sweet spot, where the XLB are the perfect temperature not to burn your mouth, but are still as hot as possible otherwise, and they go straight into sauce and then mouth intact, and explode in your mouth for maximum juiciness and taste.

Also, you obv need multiple orders. I usually eat 2-3 steamers of 10 XLB on my own, and can eat 5+ steamers myself if I feel like gorging.

Spot on.

Patron,

That’s a lot of dumplings!

Ok, I wasn’t going to mention it because I didn’t want to be responsible for a bunch of white guys having totally scalded mouths. But I also often don’t bother with any of that biting a little hole crap and just wait for them to cool a little bit and eat the whole thing. It’s a high risk maneuver that should not be attempted by novices, though. Too soon and your mouth is burnt to hell. Too late and the dumplings start turning to crap.

It perplexes me that people choose to eat food that has such demanding requirements.

I'd say on average I burn the inside of my mouth to the point of peeling dead skin on the inside of my cheeks about once per week.

Its not any more demanding than drinking a cup of coffee.

Or eating a slice of pizza.

It perplexes me that people read about really delicious food and don’t want to eat it.

It perplexes me that people still cater to Didace like Versace's willful obtusity.

Dids 2,

Pizza burns on roof are WAY worse than soup burns, c'mon man.
03-06-2018 , 05:58 PM
27, just be careful not to burn yourself. Lukewarm XLB still pretty good.
03-06-2018 , 05:59 PM
27off,

But pizza, if not excellent, is good at any temperature.

Same. That’s the sort of maverick attitude that leads to max dumpling and pizza enjoyment!

The dumplings don’t actually turn to crap. But like many foods, the closer they are to piping hot and straight out of the pot/steamer/fryer/oven/etc, the tastier they are.

The closest analogy for soup dumpling consumption time value curve I can think of off the top of my head is nachos.

On the subject of Ms. OOT, I have never been a fan of the years in which it feels like the winner won a lifetime achievement award.

I think if a nominee has been in 3 or more previous contests, they should no longer be nominated.
