Have we ever tried an OOT politics thread? I mean I'm sure it'd be a disaster and potentially ruin much of what keeps this forum ticking, but it'd be better than having THIS be the politics thread.

I think it is a cool idea, although I am pretty sure that it would be tough on mods.

Its a sucky one and not worth the build up , I just saw something on twitter and was like meh nerdy joke with suboptimal execution, then looked at the replies and was like wowisthisreallife.

Fwiw Sudo stands for superuser do and is a way of "forcing" commands in a certain operating system commandline but iana expert.



I feel like this is giving too much attention to something lame but my first reaction was lets see how the LC feels and how bad of a person I am.

I believe OOT pol has been shot down several times with good reasons. Politard jackasses taking over, bad for the OOT mood, mod nightmare.

I suspect that's a recipe for disaster for all of OOT. I have no doubt disagreements and arguments in a politics thread would spill over into other areas of OOT and pollute it for the worst; similar to how that happens irl.

This. It's a lovely idea to think that a thread of that kind could totally contain political discourse, but that **** is poison that inevitably infects a bunch of other threads. I dig the subject matter, but an idea like this isn't worth it (and would almost certainly be a non-starter with the forum mods anyway).

Agreed. It's like why I don't talk about politics with my neighbors: I much prefer to keep having friendly conversations while walking our dogs.

Example 1: Sporting Events

There are posters in SE who were almost universally seen as cool and good posters, whose reputations changed almost immediately when the politics discussions started up. That would happen in OOT too, only question is to who.

Well, the shirt clearly articulates an offensive notion, i.e. that a man wants to wave a magic wand to vaporize a woman’s rejection of his advances. As a third-grade fantasy, I certainly understand it, but as an adult expression, it seems mildly offensive to me.

That trades against the right of free expression. There ought to be a right to say what you think and feel, even if it is offensive.

Because this is so obviously not true — it’s an obvious fantasy and in many ways self-deprecating to the computer nerds who would be likely to wear it — this doesn’t seem to me to be particularly controversial.

Interestingly, the shirt ultimately indicates that the woman consents to the man’s advances — but that her change of view is magically within his control. That raises interesting philosophical notions about consent.

Create an OOT Politics thread that is always locked. Whenever there is a political derail, dump it into that thread.

Yeah, I think that’s why the effort would be futile. If it remained the usual crew of OOT regs, I think we’d have a shot at it. Just by way of examples, I’m far afield from Gregorio and patron on the substance of political views, but I like and respect both and all three of us are sufficiently disciplined to not get out of line. But my readings of the politics threads suggest that there is virtually no effort to find common ground, but instead to attempt to beat down or demonize or otherwise cloud issues.

I mean look, I’ve been taking abuse for my views on Nima for quite some time, but it hasn’t killed me as a productive member of OOT. The forum is often mocking and slightly abusive, which is all to the good. But nobody here has sought to demonize me for my outlier views on that one.
