Why do the media insist on extensively filming grieving families?

FWIW, I've heard a US passport is worth about 10k USD (as is a kidney incidentally).
Whoa! Finally a reason for me to get a passport.

Probably just nittery but it annoys me how all the news can say is it "disappeared!" trying to make it all sound mysterious.

It ****ing crashed into the ocean ok, everyone knows that. The fate of the plane is not in doubt, everyone knows what happened. The only mystery is why.

Huh? I've read plenty of Stephen King, and I think most of the movies based on his books are great. Not the Langoliers. That was dogshyt.

So despite the efforts of 30+ planes, 40+ ships and search/rescue crew from 8 different countries searching hundreds of square miles and not a single shred of evidence has been found, we're still supposed to assume it "just crashed"? I'm not one for paranormal conspiracies, but seemingly vanished doesn't seem so farfetched right now.

Apparently they may have found a door from the plane around where the oil slicks were found.

Crazy story. It'll be interesting to see if it's confirmed.

i mean yea thats probably what happened. However its not out of the realm of possibility it was highjacked and taken to a small uninhabited island and everybodys having an orgy right now.

CNN:

Rahman discounted media reports that a plane door had been spotted.

"That report was not verified officially by the Vietnamese authorities," he said.

Another report said the plane's tail had been found. That, too, is untrue, he said.

This was news yesterday. Current reports by the director general of the Malaysian civil aviation department said this to be untrue and unverified, ultimately discounted as being part of the Malaysian Airline plane.

i really hated the use of 'vanished' by the bbc inside the first 24 hours and thought that was pretty tacky/sensationalist. however, the longer this goes on the more applicable it is. yeah i'd imagine it's still 98% to be in the sea but that 2% is super intriguing.

Probably just nittery but I hate when people speak in absolutes. 'Everyone knows that' when clearly you cant be 100% sure. Odds are well in your favor that its somewhere in the sea but don't speak so confidently when you could be wrong that small % of the time. Because you will look really dumb (and rightfully so) when you are. (note: expand this advice outside this particular issue...not trying to pick on you buddy its just good advice to follow)

Ok, so just add qualifiers to all the things you can be reasonably certain about. Not sure what stupid point you're trying to make.

Except nobody does know that. "Disappeared" is absolutely the correct term here. The authorities knew where it was and now they don't. So it disappeared. It will have that status until the first piece of wreckage is found. It's factually correct reporting.

Sorry you deem it stupid. Ignorance is certainly bliss

Same thing can be seen with the UB cheating thread on here a few years back.

"OMG delete this thread ASAP, you are over paranoid"
"There is no cheating you idiot"

I will not posts anymore regarding this issue so you can have the last word if you feel the need to do so but its not a stupid point, .

1st of all nothing can disappear. When your keys are missing do you refer to them as having disappeared? Or do you refer to them as being not accounted for? Lets say you watch the garbage collecter outside your window. You see him moving from house to house, emptying his garbage. Then, your wife calls you to tell your that she has located your keys. You thank her and go back to jerking it to the garbage man, and you notice that the garbage in front of your house has disappeared.

Did it really disappear? Maybe if you think like an ant everything appears and disappears to you. The word disappear hints at scientifically unexplainable physical removal. Maybe in a laboratory when scientists deal with cutting edge laws of physics stuff may seem to genuinely disappear. But in a universal sense, nothing can disappear or appear.

If a rescue boat locates the airplane wreckage will that wreckage have appeared? Even if the seagull has been taking ****s on in for several days?
