Tis true! I woke up in a bathtub full of ice in Mexico City with a note attached to me stating "get to a hospital quickly, we stole your passport"

Well, I'm no expert, but you've certainly changed my mind. I'm going with pilot error as the default reason from now on. It's interesting how most of the documentaries seem to focus on mechanical failures as the cause. Doors flying off, tops flying off and plenty of engines flying off causing crashes.

I think I've been misled by these shows, but that shouldn't surprise me.

And my heart goes out to the friends and family of those on board.

This could have been caused by something bizarre that nobody would ever think of.

I say this because I watched an episode of Aircraft investigation last night about this flight.

Basically, the pilot let his kids into the cockpit and his 14 year old son ended up crashing the plane.

Not really anyone you can blame there except for the kid.

that's what was mainly tripping me out. i've always thought take-offs/landings were the real sketchy points. that's definitely where i've experienced most anxiety--outside of some real bumpy stuff on smaller planes.

-- i've seen some of those doc type things that make it out as a series of small errors that lead up to a big problem.

Yes, welcome to 80's Russia. Seems extremely applicable for this situation.

I read that on a flight from Dubai to Mangalore, India that crashed a few years ago, they found 10passengers with stolen or fake passports off 158 passengers so let's not jump to conclusion.

It wouldn't be terrorism. Terrorism normally has a political goal in mind and crashing an airplane without any responsibility taken or message sent would defeat the purpose of why terrorist organizations exist.

Not saying that there wasn't a hostile takeover or some kind of bomb. A mental patient could have squeezed his/her way onto the flight and ****ed it up.

You don't know if any terrorist organizations have claimed responsibility. And those that would are often lying to gain attention to their cause. The same thing happened with Pan Am 103 bombing. Several groups contacted government agencies claiming credit, none of which turned out to be true. Libya never came out and said "we did it!" In fact, they did the opposite until Qaddhafi finally accepted Libyan responsibility 15 years later.

Now they're saying it may have turned around/changed course based on the radar:

Again seems odd that it took a day and a half to come to that little nugget.

Yeh this struck me as a bit odd when I read it, but I'm no expert. I know airlines often overbook as it's not uncommon for people not to turn up, but here these 5 people clearly were there, had their luggage on and then decided not to fly.

This is becoming increasingly similar to Lost.

By the time we hit turbulence, we … we were a thousand miles off course. They're looking for us in the wrong place.

In regards to that Russian crash in '94: I can't imagine how pissed the families of the deceased were after reading the transcripts of what transpired in the final moments of leading up to that crash. Just absolute gross incompetence on an extremely disturbing level... They were running a three-ring circus in that cockpit.

How does the kid screw everything up so bad the pilot can't correct things. Was he letting him land?

Read the wikipedia on it... First the little girl sat in the pilot seat and pretended to fly the plane while her father changed the course on the autopilot to make it seem as if she was turning the plane. Then the 16yo son hopped in the seat, but he was really whipping the controls around and ended up disengaging part of the autopilot. For some reason, no one in the cockpit knew that it had happened, and by the time they realized what was going on, all hell was breaking loose...

But if you read the actual conversations, it's mind-boggling how inept the crew comes off...

No, they were cruising as I recall, but his daughter just held on to the controls and didn't cause a problem, then the teenage boy tried to really do stuff.
