Agree with El D on the legit career path possibility. Like everything in NY, it's pretty competitive, but if you're good you'll move up. AFAIK, salons don't generally run background checks (actually I'd be shocked given the number of clearly insane stylists I've encountered ("Hey, Nina, thanks for taking me on such short notice. How's everything going?"--"Oh, it's going alright except my BF took out a restraining order on me.")) so much as they just relentlessly gossip about people once they are there and see how they fit in. Salon owners, however, needing a bank loan to open a shop in a clear high risk endeavor will most certainly be vetted and have every orifice examined and measured for future comparison, IYKWIM.

To White Trash, there are always trashier. The fact she is actually in beauty school gives her a leg up over white trash that's just getting arrested doing nothing. Or that she doesn't have any kids. It's like how people always view rich people as someone who makes 2x as much as them, even if they make a ton of cash.

El Diablo - I also want to add that Aveda schools are slightly above Paul Mitchell. Paul Mitchell still isn't bad, and I have definitely gotten my hair cut by students there once or twice. Aveda is more in line with Redken education.

At least coming from a consumer perspective, when I hear someone has Aveda training, I immediately trust them to cut my hair more.

That's a good thing, I think. Maybe observing a few trials will allay her own criminal tendencies.
