Anyway, the commute to Secaucus from New York is surprisingly quick, so unless you want to live somewhere where nothing happens (i.e., New Jersey), do not consider moving to New Jersey.

seriously though, where did all the poor people go if rents are so high and everything is so safe?
short answer, those that remain are crowded into high-density slums in south bronx, brooklyn, etc. the poorest neighborhoods face a ridiculous housing crisis and many people have also fled to cities in neighboring counties or new jersey. the outer boroughs are being developed rapidly.

aside from that, crime and poverty, while obviously closely correlated, do not necessarily move completely in lock-step with one another. most violent crimes are confined to the poor against the poor at this point. property crimes occur in the 'frontier areas' where gentrification is still taking place.

also, freakonomics is ******ed on this issue. it's been thoroughly debunked.

If you want to commute to New Jersey from New York and your office isn't within walking distance of the train station, you need to have a car. In Manhattan. Unless OP has a lot of money, this seems like a terrible idea (assuming he'd have to live in Manhattan for that quick commute).

Also, are you trying to say that Giuliani didn't clean up NYC?

EDIT: Not sure if you're referring to poor people moving out or the city being safer.

Seconded. It can be a fun town (it's a college town), has some nightlife and good restaurants. It also has a direct train into midtown (30 minutes) if you want to party in the city.

yeah, don't live in the city if you will be working in jersey.

1) your commute would be too long

2) you would have to pay city income tax

just live near the school and come into the city for fun

That's not clear to me. I've read he took credit for lots of things that would have happened regardless of whether he'd been mayor.

Well first, seems like suprafrey was saying, good on Giuliani for (figuratively, of course) push poor people over the cliff. Second he misspelled his name.

If that's Ridgewood, the commute into the city will freaking wear you out. Though it's a nice neighborhoody kind of area. Very old-time Brooklyn. Rough around the edges though.

Ridgewood is in Queens. Unless you're saying it has a Brooklyn vibe...

There are so many towns in Bergen County you can live in that would make your commute to Secaucus manageable. Look into Hackensack.
