I kind of wonder if it's a bait-and-switch deal; if I went to the dealer, they'd find all manner of things their website didn't take into account, and the online 'offer' would come way down.
Take a look at Carvana, too. Sold one through them recently and got a few k more than what Carmax offered and they came and picked it up at my place.

Thanks, Didace and JustSomeGuy. Starting to think about replacing the old beater, but I'm slow/fast when it comes to big decisions.

It takes me a while to decide to finally act, but when I do, it's usually a day turnaround.

Used car prices are insane right now. I bought a car in September and then lost it in a fire a couple of months ago. The insurance valued it at 20% more than I bought it for. Of course, then I had to buy a replacement car

On a similar note, U-haul prices are also through the roof. Looking to rent a tow dolly to take my Miata with us on the move, and the price, which on previous moves has always been in the $100 range ($89-129, iirc) is $450.

Thinking of selling the camping vehicle (old Honda CRV) instead of taking it with us, if we can fit the handcarry items in our regular cars. Unfortunately, our daily drivers are a Mini and a Miata, so the chances of even the cats, some clothes, and the stuff (like the booze) that the movers don't pack fitting into those cars is very slim indeed.

It's the fleecing of America I tell ya!

Nice to see you pokerjo! I thought about you the other day and was wondering how you are doing.

Is demand for U-Haul that high? Because of rent coming due or people stuck at home together getting divorced?
06-29-2021 , 12:37 PM
Mostly people moving to where they want to live because they lost their old job and/or because 100% WFH.

Speaking of moving demand, LBR, come get my household goods and bring them down to Bama. I'll buy you a couple of rounds. The moving company can't find an owner/operator, which is how this usually works, so they're packing it up as freight.

Party in Alabama at Garick's place!?!?

I'll bring the Goldslick Vodka!

Spoiler:
Superbad reference.

Give me time to get the kegarator set up, and we're on.

I've got a kegerator I no longer use if you want to make a slight detour down I-70.

OMW!

I think U-haul pricing is largely based on what inventory they have where, and where they'd like to have inventory relocated to, as opposed to a sudden increase in demand.

If you haven't already, try all the different pick up and drop off locations (& combos) within a radius you'd be willing to drive to save $. The pricing varies a lot. Even a week variance of your dates can make the price 1/2 as well.

Good call, and thanks. Saved half by switching to next city over.
06-29-2021 , 04:53 PM
Hell, by changing the date one day, I saved another $40. Down to $162 instead of $450 for returning it 7 miles away and picking it up a day early. Amazing.

I just paid $29.99 + $14.00 (insurance) + $0.99/ mile for a 17 foot box truck. How did I do?

Things have been good all things considered. The pandemic was hard on my mental health and so I took a big break from all things internet. And my stoner teenager managed to set fire to my house a couple of months ago, destroying my car and causing a lot of smoke damage. I'm currently fighting with the insurance company. Its probably going to take about 200k to fix once all is said and done

Other than that though, things have been great

Do deodorants/antiperspirants still advertise on TV like they did in the 90s? Seems like all I see is shaving stuff.

Was the abduction successful?

Is Melissa Mccarthy a known hilarious person? I just found her SNL skits and she destroys.

She's very good. She was Oscar-nominated for what was pretty much a purely comedic role in Bridesmaids, and the Academy usually can't be bothered to recognize good comedy performances.
