Once upon a time cigs were 50 cents/pack and if someone wanted to bum one most people just handed it over. Now they're much more expensive. I pay $60/carton at the Indian reservation but everywhere else they're about $8 plus change. These days most people offer some money when they ask for a cig.

Today a guy from the game I was in previously approached me while on smoke break and asked for 2 cigs and offered $1. I told him that the cigs were in my bag and told him which table I was at. He never showed up but I was wondering if I should take the money. Prior to this I just handed over a cig but this is getting to be too common.

What's my play? Take the $1 for 2 cigs or give him 1 for free? My main concern is that some people may start to take advantage, tbh.

Giving a single free cig is less desirable for that person than giving them 2 for $1.

Make the deal

Take the money. I used to work as an autocue operator and one time I did a 2 day shoot for a "Golf for Dummies" instructional video with a golf pro. Nearly every second or third take this guy would "bum a ciggie" off me. I'm in Australia and they tax alcohol and ciggies big time so you can't buy a pack of 20 for less than $20, most going for around $25-30. This guy took about 2 packets off me in the span of 2 days, at the time I probably smoked 3 - 4 cigs a day. I was in my early 20s and kind of pissed off about but couldn't speak up to anyone.

Fast forward a couple months and I get a contract to do some regular commercials where I was told I had worked well with the talent before. I thought that was cool until I saw the client and it was a golf store with that same golf pro. Every 2 weeks I would shoot a new commercial with this guy and every shoot he would take like 10 cigarettes off me. A couple times at the end of the day he said "can I grab a couple for the road". This rich golf pro wouldn't stop taking my **** and I was mad. Fortunately I've stopped smoking and left that industry.

TLDR: If you keep giving them to him for free there's a decent chance he will take advantage of you.

when i was a smoker/casino dweller, my play was to give a cigarette for free under the condition they smoke it with me while i smoked mine. i normally don't make friends easily though.

You should take the money. When I was quitting I would be the guy on the other side of this hypothetical. Quitting is fairly easy for me, until I get to the casino, then I just can't help myself. So, I always do the exact same thing. Offer someone $1 for 2. It's a win/win. Two cigs is enough to satisfy me through however long of a poker session I play without my breaking down and buying a pack and that comes out to $20 a pack for the seller. Everybody's happy. I hate when guys just want to give me one. I don't want to be a bum. I hated people bumming smokes from me when I had cigarettes and I don't want to be that guy.

As long as it is not a chronic bummer, which is a character I have not encountered since college, I would just give him one for free. Never had anyone ask me for two cigarettes though.

I used to treat it like the girl's offer to split the check on an early date. Say that's ok once and if the guy really wants to give it to you take it.

Now I'm on the bumming end of things and don't offer money or ask for two.

lol, good catch. no wonder the people I buy cigs from don't seem as enthusiastic about the deal as I think they should. Still, $10 a pack is nothing to sneeze at! Unless you're in Canada or Australia or NYC.

unless the offerer is a hot chick, $1 for 2 cigs is a massive LOL.

something like $3 for 1 cig is more what I'm used to, at least in LV

What planet do you live on where $1 a cig was normal 20yrs ago?

I've smoked for +20yrs, a lot of my friends smoke and I've never in my life seen someone pay $1 for a cig. The only time I've ever seen someone pay for a cig from another person was when I was in middle/high school and they cost $0.25 each.

Yeah, that's about the size of it right there. I'd spot random moochers a free one until my generosity started getting abused.

I always get a kick outta your threads, Howard. Smoke em if ya got em!

you don't pay for a cigarette. you're paying because you're bothering another human being with inane requests, buy your own goddamn cancer sticks

and if you can't be bothered, at least have a common sense to not be a cheap scumbag. most smokers don't have common sense though, so I'm not terribly surprised

and lol at comparing middle school to real life
