Is this correct?

-Billy holds the record for 20+ years at around 800k or something.
-Steve beats the record by a lot, but they don't count it for whatever reason.
-Steve sets the record live, at Funspot, and achieves the first live Kill Screen.
-Billy's little friend plays an old video that Billy has been hanging onto for a while that shows him getting an even higher score, they count it, and Billy has the record once again.
-At the end, Steve beats Billy's top score and is recrowned the champion.
-Epilogue: Billy once again reclaims the title with a new score.

Is this accurate?
Sounds good except:

The kill screen was the first one at Funspot. It's not clear whether it's the first live one

Ah, damn. That's weak on the film makers part. Thanks for the insight, avatar sharer. And thanks Suzzer, I forgot to mention that.

Finally got around to seeing it the other day. Awesome movie! They definitely couldn't have cast a more evil villain then Billy if they had tried.

MEbenhoe,

Do you think the rumor that Billy studied Steve's tapes, gained new strategy from them, and then set a new record w/ a camera set to a fake date (to show he got to 1m first) is true?

M: "fwiw, I pretty much assumed anyone who would be remotely interested in actually seeing this movie already knew what CDS posted. Maybe I overjudged how common knowledge that was" That's pretty funny. I suspect the vast majority of people watching this film have little idea that there's even an official Donkey Kong record, and certainly don't know who holds it or if it was broken recently.

All: I just saw this tonight, thought it was awesome. And this was the first time I opened this thread. I'm always surprised at people who open OOT threads about movies they want to see and then are surprised when they see spoilers.

Yes, I definitely underestimated this movie's audience as only being video game nerds.

I've obviously never seen the tapes of them both playing, but I've read there tactics differ pretty greatly in some ways, so I doubt this is true.

yeah i think Day said that Billy liked to gain the majority of his points by jumping over barrels while Steve prefered to smash them.

All,

Last night spent an hour or so reading Twin Galaxies forum and various other articles and stuff. Sounds like Billy Mitchell got screwed over pretty bad in this movie, but at least he's getting a lot of publicity.

ya from all accounts they are both kind of geeky douches in their own way...but they went ahead and portrayed Billy as a really mean spirited evil type of person...when he is apparantly just kind of geeky tool.

But they made a point to show that it wasn't just Billy the Villian, it was all his TwinG fanboys protecting him as well. So don't you have to wonder about the sources that defend him? I'm asking, not arguing. Obv I didn't read all the stuff you read.

IMO Kuh came off as a possibly a bigger dbag than Billy. Like when: he wouldn't let Steve view the tape. That smug sonofabitch.

Also, Mr. Awesome ruled. Great movie.

This movie has really made me want to buy a Donkey Kong arcade game. They're going for about $3500 from the few sites I've checked. Damn, that game is f'ing hard.

Surely demand is up due to movie. Pick some obscure game to make your record run at.

No record run here, it's just that DK is a really fun, albeit hard, game. I used to play it on my older brother's Atari back when I was younger and I really enjoyed it. Popeye was also fun. A lot of the machines I saw for the $3500 figure had like 40 games on them.

I'd also really love to get ahold of Off Road. That game was so fun.

I completely agree.

El D,
After seeing the movie, don't you think that TwinG is going to continue to support Billy...and that you should maybe read other less biased websites to really get the best opinion of this dude? I mean, he did sau & do ALL that knowing he was being filmed! I just do not think editting would change much about his portrayal of being a d-bag.

Was asking Badger if he knew the people associated with the film because he went to high school with Steve Wiebe and the producers. One of my buddies did that is why.

No, I know the Associate Producer (Tweel) through a good friend from college. I got to meet a lot of the crew when they were in Austin for South by Southwest.

I've wanted this game since I was a kid. I used to play it for hours on the NES and in arcades. There's a bar here in Austin that has it that I stop at a lot. I'm always saddened because I'm about 1/1000th as good as I was as a kid. When you figure in selective memory it's more like 1/10th as good, but still, you get the point.

Finally got around to seeing this (Friday turned into a Wii marathon instead of seeing it), and it was great. I never thought to get a weight lifting glove for trackball games. Perhaps I should make a run at some Golden Tee high scores.

I never realized how hard Donkey Kong was, since I never actually saw those springs. Crazy.

This doesn't make me want to buy a machine, but it does make me want to find one and play the hell out of it for a few hours.

Can someone who has seen this movie comment on how long it takes them to set these records? It's obviously hours, but is it days too?

Man I don't see how this doesn't get mind-numbingly boring after awhile. I mean I'm sure it long ago stopped being fun for these obsessed freaks, but if they're playing for 1/2+ days and have to have people bring them food, drink, etc. then that's kinda LOL. And what if they have to take a leak or a dump?

Also, can someone elaborate on what the "kill screen" entails? And the springs that Duke mentioned in his post? Thanks - I don't think these answers are easily findable on those forums, and since Charlie wrecked the outcome for me upthread I've been reading all the spoilers but haven't seen this addressed.

I think I remember that Steve's Record game took something like 2:17h

I have my knowledge only from the movie, but I think the Donkey Kong game has a bug, at a certain level the time that you will have for that level is so short, you can't possibly get through it and you'll lose all your lives, thus this is the end of the game.

In DK, its actually that the amount of time you are given to complete the level decreases over time. On the kill screen, it is physically impossible to complete the level before the time runs out and you die.
