The author's follow up, Armada, is also a fun read. Not as good as Ready Player One, but I still very much enjoyed it.

This guy starts a video game company with his friend; they create this virtual reality video game that takes over the world and upon his death he plants an "egg" within the game that when found will give the person all of his fortune and control of the reality. Your completely immersed in this video game.....great read.
I see a bunch of people already supported this commented but yeah entertaining book. Coincidentally/symbioticly I have a friend who loves king of kong, and I'm in the process of getting him ready player one (from the library) because I feel he should enjoy that as well!

Word Wars is good. Also would recommend Wordplay (crossword puzzle solvers) and Spellbound (spelling bee contestants).

Ready Player One is a fun read if you're heavily nostalgic for the '80s, but it's pretty poorly written and is nerd culture out of control. Yea we get it bro, you think Monty Python is funny.

Armada is awful by most accounts. There are plenty of hit pieces on the books and the author around. "i don't even own a television" podcast (a podcast about bad books) had episodes on both.

Perhaps "Ready Player One" will be a better movie than book. It was a good concept, but that writing was not great.

I didn't find the writing to be bad at all for an escape fiction novel. Those saying it was bad, what did you find bad about it?

This was decent, but won't be inspiring any Nibbler Offs imo.

I'm not even nostalgic to the 80s (I knew almost none of the games) but enjoyed the book thoroughly. Having read the book 2 years ago i can still vividly recall the images in my mind of what i imagine the world looks like.

However, the author struggled to seamlessly integrate the references into the storyline. Plus a lot of the references were hipsterrific.

Thanks for the recommendation, sixfour. Good thing the documentary is subbed. My girlfriend won't be able to follow game documentaries otherwise. Too much complicated vocabulary would sail straight passed her, but as long as its texted she will be able to stay engaged throughout.

Are there any websites or blogs out there that covers gaming rivalries? I mean, a site that constantly follows and stays updated on that theme?

Just saw this movie, very cool. Thinking about making a run for the title myself lol. Anybody know where you can play King Kong in the New York area?

I enjoyed it while reading it for the most part, I can also picture a lot of it pretty well in my mind (the stacks, the pizza parlor with Pac-Man, the apartment, etc.). Afterwards though it left me feeling like there was nothing substantial there (and of course there isn't, don't think anybody would argue that there is).

- Author has characters "grin" a lot and other similar attempts at affectations and creating relationships that come off as awkward and poorly written.

- The romance was horrible. IIRC it feeds into the misogynist nerd mythology about the woman who will FINALLY see you for you, no self-improvement necessary except to immerse yourself more in geek crap.

- It's nerd culture out of control, just ****ing moronic geek in-jokes that aren't and never were clever or cool in any way.

- Nobody is watching Monty Python movies 100+ times and then still cracking up with laughter over them. GTFO

Have you got a link? I'm either dumb or it's been pulled or probably both.
