Is "clutch" a word people still use?

I was given quite a few odd looks when I used it in a sentence. Someone even asked me what I meant. I couldn't think of a better synonym so I went with "helpful" in the heat of the moment.

Here is what I said:

"That newspaper will be clutch when we are eating crabs tonight."

To be clear, they all know that you put newspaper down when eating crabs so that wasn't the issue. The issue was the word "clutch".

It works but sounds a little clunky as used, not reaction worthy at all. Your usage is different than it's commonly used. I'm not used to seeing it describe an inanimate object.

I like key there better.
