Randomly, of course, so people didn't get the card intended for them.
Or surreptitiously slid them underneath a pile of papers on a co-worker's desk.

No good reason for me to mentally retain this sketch for almost 30 years since it isn't particularly funny.

I just recently, after his ridiculously funny appearance on Conan O'Brien's podcast, found out that Kevin Nealon was almost Sam Malone (apparently got to a fifth audition in the process, per an interview he did on Stern).

I have to think it's better it went to Ted Danson because it feels impossible to improve on what Danson did with the role, but it feels like Nealon could have pulled it off in this alternate universe. Kind of like how Bob Odenkirk almost being Michael Scott is intriguing even though it's near-impossible to have been as good as Carell.

Cheers would have never hit its heights with Nealon.

Odenkirk would have been Michael Scott more in line with the original UK version, where he was more of an insensitive ass than an oblivious clown.
That, I believe, would have worked great, but it would have also been a completely different US version altogether.

One man's crappy opinions.

Well it’s safe to guess that Odenkirk Michael would have been more Brent-adjacent to start, because Carell played it that way himself in S1. And then they made a concerted effort to make him less of a dick going forward. No possible way to know if they would have similarly adjusted with Odenkirk, but just looking at Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul shows that he has multiple gears and can bring multiple good takes to the same character.

I agree that it’s just difficult to see Nealon Cheers going as well.

Michael Scott was the bizarro Idaho killer.

Dropped some weight and got (hair plugs and) happier.

Nealon would've felt more like Jerry (dork-adjacent surrounded by funnier, idiocentric supporting characters) than a Chad like Dansen.

Haven't watched the Conan clip but Nealon is a guy who's truly funny off-the-cuff and less so in scripted stuff. Poor man's more straight-laced Norm.

Forgot (until just now) he followed him on Weekend Update. Then it was Colin Quinn if I've got the timeline right without looking.

Will Ferrell is the opposite of this fwiw.

When he filled in for Letterman while he was out from heart surgery he was totally bleh. Basically a subdued version of Jimmy Fallon or James Corden.

Comedic actor and improv guy. No real conversational wit to speak of imo. He's a HOF late-night guest to some but it's all costumes and outlandish stuff.

This is 20 minutes (and does start about 40 minutes into the interview…he kept up this energy the whole hour), so no small time commitment, but I was ****ing cry-laughing by the end of it.

In all other areas in life, I'm generally very disciplined about putting some sort of personalized witticism down when signing someone's card, but - between the volume and the fact that hybrid work has led me to barely know half these people - I've been beaten down by this into just saying "happy birthday" above my signature. It's a true capitulation to simply join in with the crew of people who would do this for every card for an entire lifetime and never feel weird about being that boring.
COVID got a few things right and at my office this exact birthday card **** came to an abrupt and joyous end.

How old would Kevin Nealon be in 1982? About 25? A washed up MLB pitcher at 25? Or am I missing something?

29.

He mentioned on Stern that Sam was originally written to be a former football player rather than baseball, though I guess that doesn’t matter much to the question. But Malone had crippling alcoholism that drove him out of the game, right? Wouldn’t have to be too old.

The way I see it, Ted Danson was perfect in his role for Cheers.

If you mean Norm followed Nealon, yes. Colin Quinn was an all-time atrocity in that role. I've never seen any other Weekend Update anchor come close to being that bad. Every week was like if Norm's Saget roast hadn't been a self-aware bit.

I don't watch a whole lot of the various NFL studio shows - Rex Ryan's veneers are just shocking. Wouldn't you want something a little more natural?
