Really straight forward. You suggest a charity and I will attempt to give something to that charity. It's not much money but I have no use for it. I really can't say how much it is because it will be different from month to month. For now it's about $100 next month it could be $50.

That's all there is to it! Fire away.

Thanks for reading.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

They've made a huge impact on many lives, including mine. They have world class doctors that do work for many people that could not afford it otherwise.

Edit...this is an amazing thing you are doing!! I hope others chime in.

You mabye want to think about the possibility of having a godson in Africa or elsewhere, if you are sure to be able to keep the small monthly payments running for many years. Providing at least one good meal per day, and a good education (according to the circumstances) means so much, not just for the person her-/himself, but also for her/his family.

I don't have indepth knowledge about such charity-organisations atm, but if you like the idea, I will do serious research to find a really good one!

I'll probably do this later when I get home or at weekend when I get a chance to move some funds around. I'm selling a few house hold items that I don't need anymore so hopefully I can add to my donation with the items sold.

I would recommend GiveWell - an organisation that evaluates charities and directs funds to those that can make the biggest impact with the money. You can donate direct to them and specify whether they can use any for their own running costs or whether 100% is to be passed on to the charities.

Robin,

Aren't you always complaining about how poor you are, how crappy your job is, and how little money you make? Not trying to rain on your parade here, and I think it's great to support charity, but, man, take care of yourself first. Did you come into a bunch of money, or are you just trying to do something new? What's your reason for wanting to donate?

I don't want to talk about those issues in this thread. There already is a thread going in the blog section if you care to read and post there.

St Jude Children's Research Hospital

They help kids with cancer, if they need to be away from home for extended periods they shelter the family for free, they cover all medical costs, they're an amazing organization.

From their What We Do page:

Changing children's lives is about more than putting in a well here or a school there. It’s about:
  • building up communities, responding to the root causes of poverty and creating resilience
  • encouraging parents to send their boys and girls to school.
  • creating rewarding work opportunities for adults so that children aren’t at risk of being sent to do dangerous jobs
  • finding out what a community needs and how best to respond.

To do this, we work in different areas, all contributing together so children and families enjoy the fullness of life with justice, dignity, peace and hope.

---

You can sponsor a child monthly, or simply give a gift.

i always wondered about these things. if i sponsor a kid in some african country to provide 2 decent meals/day, how do they pick which kid? and even if you get to pick somehow, does that kid sit back loungin with his "decent meal" while everyone else around him stares at him and drools?

$100 won't pique enough interest. The roulette crapshoot for charity was way funner.

I think for this reason some (most/all?) of them give you a child to correspond with but your money goes to the community rather than one child or family.

Shipped $50 to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Tune in next month to see how much money I can throw away. Good luck to them.

Awesome. I was going to second the CHOP nomination. Such an amazing hospital, thanks for supporting them.

I'll also nominate the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA.org) for next month. Two diseases that almost certainly affect someone you know well. No cure as of now but with continued research support there is hope. I just started a newly developed treatment last month that would not be an option without research.

Thanks again!

a $50 or $100 savings bond in your safe deposit box every month. then in 20 or 30 years you can give away WAY MORE money, and you'll do even more good. or decide to do something else with it.
