Literally millions of people are leaving the state of FL. Might not be hotels until Atlanta.

You're going to have to explain why you think this would prevent someone from getting a hotel till they could return to Miami. You can get to Atlanta before the hurricane arrives in Miami with many many hours to spare.

God this is terrible. Looks absolutely devastating for the Keys. Such a beautiful and special place. Stay safe everyone.

Eye interacting with the Cuban coast. Trough picking up Irma and expected to start moving it NNW over the next few hours. When that happens will really narrow down where this thing will make landfall in Florida.

NHC daily update should be out soon. Good chance she'll be bumped back to cat 5.

you don't need to drive to Atlanta and stay at a hotel. If you live near the ocean in an evacuation zone due to a 12 foot surge, drive inland to a shelter. It's not supposed to be a vacation.

And she's a cat 5 again.. Pressure down from earlier to 924mb. She's gaining strength and it's got 90+ degree water in front of it near the keys. Nighttime also when Hurricanes are at their strongest.

On Hilton Head Island, what would you do with cats? Obviously taking the dog, but it's a 2 story house and they're super self sufficient?

As of right now it doesn't really seem like it will be too bad here despite the evacuation order(not as bad as Matthew and people stayed then) and I'm a bit paranoid about how ripe of a looting opportunity this could be.

Good luck to my hometown St Pete

oh boy. NHC cone took a big shift west. this is bad news for the panhandle / gulf if the track continues to shift west like they have been

Re: Irma is Coming (and Jose is not too far behind)

It's looks like the wrong part of Florida may have evacuated. Euro that just ran has this making landfall in Sarasota up into Tampa. I've got family north of Tampa that up until now weren't expecting anything more than 60-70mph winds. They say very few of their neighbors have gone anywhere and they don't have plans too. Not good

For the tlr crowd, Tampa can't handle a storm half this size. This will be catostrophic. If you know anyone still in the area urge them to leave NOW.

When was the last time there were two major landfall events on the scale of Harvey and Irma?

Katrina year had like 4 in the US within a month? 2 in one season is no where close to unprecedented.

Katrina killed 1800 and did more damage than any hurricane ever. Rita killed over 100 in TX alone. Wilma was the strongest hurricane ever measured.
