Re: Irma is Coming (and Jose is not too far behind)

There is no such thing as "doesnt look to be a problem" at this point in the hurricane. The eye could pass to the west of him funneling ten+ feet of water directly into his bedroom. If that happens and he stays he can die. I would GTFO ASAP.

Yeah, if it goes up the west coast, I'm screwed for sure.

We still plan on being in a concrete building with hurricane windows on the third floor. If they let us in. Our plan B is stay where we are. No plan C.

of course there will be a surge on the west coast, although not as high as the east side. Don't under estimate this storm, this has never been seen before.

I'm in Mobile, AL where the evacuees are evidently turning it into a Mad Max scenario on the interstate. I mean the original, not that weird new one with the functioning android-arm.

Hurricanes are weather, not climate. Whether or not there is climate change, hurricanes neither prove nor disprove it.

That's not the climate change argument. You always hear this from CC deniers. ALWAYS. You shift the goal posts to argue a strawman because you don't want to face facts.

CC is having an effect on hurricanes because the warmer water has a higher heat content; thus we have stronger storms WHEN they occur. Today is the first day there were 2 storms of at least 150 mph winds recorded in the Atlantic Ocean. Irma was 185 mph for something like 3 days straight. It's unheard of.

Warm ocean water is just one ingredient to making a hurricane. You need like 10 things to go right for a hurricane to form. But when a hurricane does form, there is more energy available from the ocean.

It does not mean there will be more hurricanes.

Also, hurricanes only count if they hit the US...why?

The argument isn't 12 years of no hurricanes at all. It's 12 years of no major hurricanes. That goes completely against what you just said (that hurricanes that do form will be stronger).

As for the "ignoring non-US hurricanes" argument, there were no cat 5 Atlantic hurricanes at all from 2008 through 2015. There was one last year (weakened to non-major status by the time it hit the US), and Irma.

Thanks!. We just got settled. Ugh, they shut down the elevators so we had to haul everything up 2 flights of stairs. Windows are facing what will be the wind, but rated for 125 mph. This is a pretty solid building. It'll be scary when it happens but I think we are safe.

We got here in the nick of time. They are closing roads now.

For the greater good ( not just based on your situation ) , would it be better for Florida and the other states if the storm keeps going west ? I'm assuming that if the eye catches more land instead of brushing east of Miami it will slow down some ?

No one wants this thing to go to far west and have a chance of swinging into the gulf. The window is still open in the cone but it's not likely not happen.

Best case for Florida is that this thing makes some sort of landfall in Cuba. That would knock some of the strength out of it. Some current models suggest a decent chance of this.

What happens if it swings into the gulf? It picks up even more steam then absolutely hammers Bama, Miss, and the panhandle?

Bad things happen if this gets into the gulf anywhere near the power it is now. If it never makes landfall in Florida and swings around it should maintain if not build. The gulf is very warm right now.

The EWRC this thing just went through made sure it's going back to cat 5. Also spread the wind field out more

If i didnt have a wife and kids to look after id drive to south florida (im 8 hours away) and experience this thing first hand. Ive always found natural disasters to be intriguing. Ive experienced 2 flash floods and a tornado so far.

Re: Irma is Coming (and Jose is not too far behind)

newest NHC update has it obliterating the Keys and then making landfall in Naples. Could still be cat 4 as far north as Tampa. Not good at all for the west coast of florida. Swinging into the gulf pretty much ruled out now
