New predictions haven't changed much. Lots of people on the road.

Memory Jogger - Hurricane Andrew 1992

This is what happened when Hurricane Andrew hit Homestead, FL in 1992 with 175 mph winds (Irma is 185 mph)

Don't under estimate this storm if you live South Florida!

Here's what Richard Branson and his team were doing in the Virgin Islands preparing for Irma. That's how you roll in a hurricane.

Quote:
We are expecting to get the full force of the hurricane in around five hours’ time, when we will retreat to a concrete wine cellar under the Great House. Knowing our wonderful team as I do, I suspect there will be little wine left in the cellar when we all emerge.

Take away: seek shelter if you live in a mobile home and a cat5 hurricane is imminent.

Also isn't Irma predicted to be a Cat 4 when it hits Florida with winds around 140-150 mph?

Also greatest weatherman ever

Have hurricanes come this quickly in the past? Gonna be 3 major hurricanes in less than 3 weeks.

Estimated wind speed when it hits FLA now 130 mph (6 hours ago was 155 mph). Also, updated models show a slight shift to the west.

Ugh, new forecast just came out and moved it 20 miles west.

Parts of St. Pete (me included) now under mandatory evacuation.

Re: Irma is Coming (and Jose is not too far behind)

I just saw on the news people lined up in their SUV's for what looked like a few hundred yards, some waiting for 6 or more hours, only to pick up a max of 10 sand bags per vehicle.

I'm not a rocket scientist but 10 sand bags isn't going to protect anyone from 130 mph winds or a 15 foot storm surge. Why the authorities let people waste their valuable time on that line just makes me wanna smh.

It is not unprecedented, with sequential storms having occurred many decades ago (long before people began trying to associate every little weather deviation with global warming/climate change).

Seems to me it was Connie and Diane that were back to back about 60 years ago. Cleo and Dora were overlapping storms about 50 years ago. Also, Katrina and Rita were not that far apart even though several named storms existed in the same period of time (~3 week gap)...

There have been other active years where there were almost simultaneous storm systems kicking up...mid-1990's had at least one year like that which was crazy.

And, as we know here in Houston...it need not even be a hurricane to produce massive rain problems. Allison was NEVER a hurricane and Harvey was no longer a hurricane. Both are associated with record rainfall...

Yeah, that's why I'm not getting any. The ocean is a *****. Sandbags won't do anything.

They just showed an old satellite image of Andrew on top of one of Irma. Unbelievable. Irma is twice the size.

Re: Irma is Coming (and Jose is not too far behind)

Living in FL all my life, I have been impacted by seven or eight hurricanes at this point, including Andrew when I was a child. I'll never forget the devastation that Andrew caused in my neighborhood right after the storm. At this point, I think this is the big one. The one that makes everybody forget about Andrew.

As a side-note. Florida is the third largest state in the country, and you have a hurricane that is going to devastate the whole thing. I would not be surprised if this has serious ramifications for the country's economy.

Not super rare at all. This is the 8th or 9th time there have been 3 simultaneous hurricanes in the Atlantic since 1900. A couple of times, there have been 4 simultaneous hurricanes.

Re: Irma is Coming (and Jose is not too far behind)

Florida has 7 million more residents now than they did when hurricane Andrew hit. Traffic already looks bad getting out.

The eye wall replacement this thing is going through is horrifinglly beautiful to watch. NHC predicting this to weaken to cat 4 before landfall. Some other models/mets think it might sustain cat 5 as the new eye wall tightens and rebuilds pressure.

Re: Irma is Coming (and Jose is not too far behind)

Was in southern florida like 2 weeks ago and had been raining a ton and seemed like everything was super soaked and there was standing water in all the fields/trees on side of road. Does that matter at all for this, or the Everglades/etc basically have an unlimited ability to drain water?
