It is not unprecedented, with sequential storms having occurred many decades ago (long before people began trying to associate every little weather deviation with global warming/climate change).
Seems to me it was Connie and Diane that were back to back about 60 years ago. Cleo and Dora were overlapping storms about 50 years ago. Also, Katrina and Rita were not that far apart even though several named storms existed in the same period of time (~3 week gap)...
There have been other active years where there were almost simultaneous storm systems kicking up...mid-1990's had at least one year like that which was crazy.
And, as we know here in Houston...it need not even be a hurricane to produce massive rain problems. Allison was NEVER a hurricane and Harvey was no longer a hurricane. Both are associated with record rainfall...
