Fascinating, tell me more

Based on the driving I see from people with Florida license plates, I've always been under the impression that they don't know how to drive with fully functioning traffic lights.

I think they only work clockwise.

Dids,

I got thru to St. Thomas this morning for only the 2nd time since the hurricane. It doesn't sound good for your vacation.

Exgf is there and sent the following txt along w some pictures:

" I have service this morning. No I am at xxxxx condos a friend gave us to stay in. Yes on txt about packages and supplies. My outfit is pretty pathetic right now. We get power for 4 hrs at night. There are armed guards everywhere. Looting has begun and it's crazy. People are desperate. This will sound nuts but wish I had a gun. Pretty safe at xxxxx, but not at our house."

The airport is scheduled to open next Monday. People are taking any boats they can and going to Puerto Rico to fly out.

I checked the tracking on packages I sent and they're still sitting in Des Moines.

Limit your weekend drinking imo

biggerboat - looks like you are serviced by Duke Energy, here is their outage info page if you don't already know about it.

The pictures I've managed to find online don't look good. Even if the resort somehow didn't get damaged too badly I don't see how they can have the infrastructure (people and things) up and running in 9 weeks.

Not the first time we've had vacation plans upset by a hurricane. Screws us up but it's nothing compared to what the people that live there are dealing with.

Thanks. Yeah, the condo people said " maybe" tomorrow for power.

The gas stations are getting gas. Cops at every one keeping order.

The biggest need for me right now is ice. Nobody has any. I'm probably good into tomorrow sometime.

Dids,

They wont't. This is the islands so more like 9 years.

The only thing likely with Jose is that is survives it's Atlantic spin. Every single model last week had it collapsing on itself and being no more. Once it comes out of its spin the models should give a better idea on where it's going to go. Chances are just a lot higher now for US landfall vs last week. Still way to far out though.

Dids - somewhere around Sapphire Beach or Sugar Bay? Yeah looks like you want to make alternate plans. Sugar Bay Resort initially said they'd be closed thru the end of the year, now it's TBD. Here's a USVI hotels status link you might want to look at. It's an offshoot of a "USVI update" website. Looks like the northeast part of the island took quite a hit. Sapphire Beach Resort & Marina held up pretty well but as you mentioned, infrastructure in general will remain an issue. Check out the photos here for a look at SBRM.

As de cap points out, it's the islands so things are going to take a long time.

Duke energy just announced the "specific time" we will have power. "By Friday". Doesn't sound very specific.

They didn't even specify which Friday!

Made it home this morning, powers on, and no damage. Complex held up well. Worked in St. Pete Beach today. That big vessel isn't up against the bridge anymore. Beach looked pretty messy.

Really sad about the USVI.

Parts of the Florida keys got destroyed. That's what was expected if the storm made landfall in Tampa and it didn't unexpectedly weaken as fast as it did. It sucks with no power but you guys were lucky since it could have been a lot worse.

I also think CNN has had the best national news coverage of Irma for the past few days (they're actually pretty good when they dont talk about politics)

CNN was all I could get from the UK. The UK news channels didn't really give much of a ****.

Was good coverage though. Couldn't help but think it was a bit posed when the female reporter almost got 'hit by the flying sign', but news channels be news channels.

Cnn wasn't very helpful for people actually in the path. The local abc station was the best for us. And, yes. We were VERY lucky here. We had a good cry when we opened the door and saw nothing was damaged. Everyone we talked to here feels the same way. Nobody is complaining about anything. I know my no power post sounds like it but we are extremely grateful it wasn't worse.
